* SHRNERS THRONC, "' Declares Plan Provides for Back- [ -1 THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON,. D. C, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1921 i CAPTOL THEATER [learly 3,000 Nobles Cele- brate First Fall Session | { of Almas Temple. ; Nearly 3,000 Nobles of the Mystic, Shrine crowded into the new Capitol; Theater last night to celebrate the first fall session of Almas Temple and to wifhess forty-five aspiring Masons | reach the object of their ambition.{ The red fez was in evidence off stage and on stage and in every possible nook and corner into which it couxd‘l. be carried, while from the numerous, boxes Shrine celebrities_from other | cities and more sedate Shriners from the halls of Congress looked on and, ‘with the others, smiled, roared, ap- plauded and looked serious when the every varying change of eénts made it appropriate. At the conciusion of the rites proper, a_ vaudeville show was staged for the further entertain- ment of the big audience. Cheer for Se: At 7:30 o'clock sharp, when Senator John W. Harreld of Oklahoma entered with a party of friends, the audience arose and cheered vociferously in the belief that he was the President, andj when it found it was mistaken, it un- grudgingly cheered the senator again. Other notables included Senator Cam- eron of ' Arizond; Representatives John C. Speaks of Ohio, Stuart F. Reed of West Virginia, Charles F. 08- i den of Kentucky, Commissioner of In- dian Affairs Charles H. Burke, Walter C. Cottrell, illustrious potentate of Acca Temple, Richmond, Va; Past Potentate Clifford lreland of Moham- | med Temple, Peoria, representative in Congress _from Illinois; Past Master of Masons Lem Towers, Deputy Gra Master Cyrus Coombs, John M. Taylor of Bedouin Temple, Okla., and many, many others. “Call Me Henry” Breaks Rule. Although the rule of the evening de- barred speeches, “Call Me Henry” broke it when he was welcomed tol his own temple by Acting Potentate Leonard P. Steuart, in whose favor he | had abdicated for the evening, and both were given repeated and rous- ing cheers. Potentate Lansburgh complimented Acting Potentate Steuart on his “Inspired charge”; thanked the nobles for their loyal and unwavering support during his two terms; re- ferred with pride to the showing of Almas Temple at the recent Crescent Temple ceremonial session at Atlantic City, where Washington was repre- gented with a uniformed delegation of 600, including the two bands of Almas | and its drum corps: announced that| he would give a silver loving cup to the noble who brought in more than fifty petitions to the great ceremonial to be held November 28, when Im- perial Potentate Ernest A. Cutts of Savannah, Ga., would make his an- nual visitation, and predicted that the session of the Imperial Council in Washington in 1923 would challenge in its grandeur all others in the an- nals of Shrinedom. Iilustrious Poten- tate Cottrell of Acca Temple of Rich- mond indorsed the last statement. and assured Almas Temple of the unanimous support of Acca Temple in the matter. Band Gives Concert. Then the festivities began. Fol- lowing a popular concert by Almas Temple's brass band, came selections by Almas Orchestra, under Myer Gold- man, with a program of the favorite old songs crowned by a jazz climax; several fine selections by Almas Glee Club, seventy-five strong, under di- rection of Charles R. Bartlett; exqui- r; Grand | @ site violin selections by Noble A. [N Ralon, a member of the orchestra, who came in late and was penalized |l to the delight of the audience; a brisk and kaleldoscopic drill by the | M Arab Patrol, under Capt. Ed Dutton, 2nd a grand finale by Almas Drum Corps of twenty, under Director W. I, Jacoby. This. was followéd by a chapter of events which none but Shriners with the green and white card are sup- posed to know anything at all about. To the listener outside the theater it seemed like the most amusing part of the program, because of the fre- quent and prolonged outbursts and roars of laughter. Legion of Homor Formed. During the evening Illustrious Po- tentate Lansburgh announced to the nobility the formation of the Almas Legion of Honor, composed of nobles who_had served in any of the wars for his country, and stated that to avoid a conflict of names with other| patriotic organizations. its mame would probably be changed to Almas Temple’'s Veteran Corps. He asked and received unanimous consent to :l_mlorm and equip the new organiza- ion. It was some time after low 12, as the Masons call it, that the audience dispersed and started for their homes. HYLAN ATTACKS SCHEME TO REORGANIZE CAR LINES | ing of Transit Ring for Higher Fares. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 4.—The re- cently published preliminary plan of the transit commission for reorganiz- ing the transportation facilities of New York was attacked by Mayor Hylan, who issued a statement de- claring that the plan offered no genuine scheme of municipal owner- ship. “This plany” said Mayor Hylan, “provides for municipal backing of | the transit ring for an eight, or a ten-cent, or even a higher fare, at the same time that it saddles the city with all the bankrupt surface lines, which the traction ring has been trying to dispose of at a profit for many years. “It ties the city up, not to a new subway line built with city money, but-to old. decrepit and defunct sur- face railways.” Emphasizing the “preliminary na- ture” of the plan, Mayor Hylam said it was not intended by its sponsors to be taken seriously except by the | “gullible” during the four weeks preceding election. After election, he declared, the real plan will be | disclosed. The present scheme, he said, provides meither for municipal ownership nor municipal operation. Neither does it provide for a five cent fare. WHISKY CAR TURNS OVER' Breakneck Pursuit by Posse End- ed by Aceident. : ATHENS, Ga., October 4.—A break neck pursuit of a whisky-running au. tomobile ended four miles fro Athens yesterday, when the whisky car turped turtle as it was cornered ! by a pursuing posse from Jackson | county and a posse from Clarke coun. ty that went to intercept it. One! hundred gallons of whisky, in two barrels, and the car were confiscated and two pretty young women and a| man were arrested and taken back to | Jackson county jail-for trial. < 149 GALLONS DESTROYED. | Special Dispatch to The Star. i LYNCHBURG, Va., October 4.—Se- curing a chart which disclosed the loeation of the place where a large quantity of Franklin liquor had been buried, the local federal raiding squad recovered 149 gallons, said to have been brought here.. from Franklin county.
