Dear Travel Clubbers: When you see all the advertisements about “buy your coal now,” and think of the hundreds of apartment houses you see in the large citles you wonder how they ever kept warm beside the old-fashioned fireplace. But people like them even today. for I notice that every apartment that has o { so advertised by the owner. But the | people today like to have a hot-wa- | ter radiator right near by, I guess. The fireplace in Washington's head- quarters at the battle of Brandy- wire is certainly worth seeing, for it is_in_use today by Mr. used it 130 years ago, and as Wash- ington used it 144 years ago, when the battle was fought. There you will see the bellows to start the blaze, the warming pan, the andirons that hold the logs up and the gun and powder horn hanging over the opening, where it was handy in those days, 1 guess. BY THORNTON W. BURGESS. { Patience is & virtue when rightly put to v “that it must sufer so often from abus o —Striped Chipmunk. Striped Chipmunk possesses little patience himself. He is impatient rather than patient. He is persistent, but not patient. He cannot wait quietly for things to happen; he must keep busy trying to make them hap- pen. There are many people just tm. mé?nhm- k Pussy possesses patience, a great deal-of patlence. The pity of it is that she so ofle_n puts it to wrong usc. She wlill sit still, per- fectly still, for the longest time on the chance of catching one of the lit- {le people of the Old Orchard. Green Meadows or the Green Forest. Often she fails, whereat everybody rejoices, but it is not for lack of ience. . P hen Black Pussy discovered her master, Farmer Brown's Boy, feeding Striped Chipmunk in the path along the edge of the Old Orchard and that he and Striped Chipmunk were the best of friends she was at once filled R | with jealousy. She hid in the long grase back of a tr€e until Farmer ‘s Boy had returned to the e. Then she ran quickly to where ! he had been sitting and there in the | miadle of the path she discovered a {little round hole. l“sthe ‘didn’t have to be told whose hole that was. She knew. Even if she hadn’t known the instant she saw it her nose would have told her as soon as she smelled at it. a, ha!" said she down inside. a, ha! Sa this i8 where that fellow lives! I thought he lived down un- der the stone’ wall, but it seems 1 was mistaken or else he has moved. Well, well, well! This couldn’t be better. Tl have that fellow now ‘as sure as my tail switches. He probably is /down in there now and all I need do is to be patient. Sooner or later he'll come out and then I'll have him.” So Black Pussy crouched in the path just a few inches from that little round hole, fixed her yellow eyes on it and waited. She was pre- pared to wait a long,. long, time if necessary. She would patient, very, very patient. To catch Striped Chipmunk would be worth a great deal of patience. Her feet were gathered beneath her in just {the right position for a spring. Only jthe tip of her tail .moved.. That | twitched from time ‘to time. To save her life Black Pussy couldn’t keep the tip of that tail still for any length of time.o * Jolly, round, bright Mr. Sun climbed higher and higher in the blue, blue sky and it became hot where Black Pussy crouched. ‘But she didn’t ap- pear to mind. She was too intent on what she was doing. She intended to catch Striped Chipmunk this time and was quite willing to stand a lit- tle discomfort in order to do it. LISTEN, WORLD! | BY ELSIE nonlxr)&'. The trouble with most city folks is that they don't know enough about loneliness. They regard it as the ulti- mate horror—a disaster tg_be avoided by every possible means. * No grinning sk.eleton could seem more hideous than the prospect of an. ugcompanioned evening. “Heavens!” theg shriek, and rush for the phone: “Central, give me West 3750. Mabel, darling, can't you come over? I'm all alone! And do bring John for poker!" They may hate every word of Mabel's twitter and con- sider John as crooked as a pretzel, but anything is preferable to loneliness. And yet there is such joy in loneli- ness—such strength ana such surprise! I know a trail that goes along the mesas. There are no trees to shadow it —no brooks or little flowers. Only a beaten trail across a sun-drenched land a land as emply as the first dumb dawn. By day the great skies curve from rim to rim, bleached of all color, flayed with heat. High in the arch of that vz vaulting blaze a buzzard hangs—and waits. = The come to that lost trail. y times a lean coyote skulks alor some lost, red-eyed soul that know grave. Tne night ns and a mystery broods above the throb- bing sands like purple wings caught a veil of stars. But al alway there is no one there. No sound. And I _have gone to that far trail falone. There I have built a fire and |watched the night come down. There I have opened all my cluttered heart and felt the strong, cool hands of loneliness set all right, tidying the prickly pains, the poisoned doubts, the shoddy loves, until 1 was at peace.
