There will be a time in the near fu- ture when each city of any size will have an automobile headlight testing station. This is the prediction of il-, luminating and electrical engineers of the national bureau of standards of the Department of Commerce, who are taking an active part in the work of regulating headlights and making them safe for pedestrian and driver. Not Properly Adjusted. Much attention has been paid in the past to the properties of the lenses, and these are fairly well regulated, but there is lack of knowl- edge and control of the proper ad- justment of the lenses, which the bu- reau of standards engineers believe is just as important. The suggested headlight testing stations would be educational and preventive, as well as disciplinary. The function of a headlight lens is to control the beam so that it i8 strong enough to light the road, bu not be intense enough to blind th other travelers of the road. It shoul concentrate the light below the ho: zontal, where the road is and eyes of the opposing traveler are not. States Adopt Standard. The bureau of standards is now standardizing equipment that will be used by the states of Ohlo and Cali- fornla for testing automobile head- lights. These two states, and New York, Maryland, Connecticut, Massa- chusetts, Wisconsin and Pennsyl. vania have e specifications of the Illuminating En- gineering Society, which are the re- sult of much experimental work and practical experience.
