\ D AE(USEMENTS‘. THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, MAY 15, 1921—PART 3. Amusement s The Photoplay ROPRIETORS and managers of theaters—and particularly those of the screen playhouses—in the District of Columbia are to be called to testify on the question of prices charged for admission at a hearing before a special committee of the House District commity tee next Thursday. The theater men were expected to appear before the subcommittee headed, by Representative Loren E. Wheeler of Illinois last Friday, as the result of a controversy in the full District commit- tee at the regular meeting Wednesday. Owing to a misunderstanding, however, no witnesses appeared and the subcommittee postponed the hearing until next Thursday. THE action by the committee in deciding to investigate movie prices vas based on its construing the recent ruling of the Supreme Court of the United States, upholding the Saulsbury act, as broadening the powers of the committee. The latter holds that by the Supreme Court decision it has authority to investigate “any matter affecting the inter- ests of the people of the District of Columbia.” * ¥ k ok TAMETRICALLY opposite views on the subject are held by at least two members of the committee. Representative Underhill questions the authority to investigate theater prices, taking the ground that the “movies” are luxuries and that the committee exceeds its authority when it proceeds to investigate charges made for entertainment that is not a public necessity. * k ¥ X * ok k ok N the other hand, Representative Blanton insists that the entire popu- lation of the National Capital is interested in motion pictures. There- fore, he argues, it is the duty of Congress to determine whether the prices charged for this type of public diversion are reasonable and proper.
