AMUSEMENTS? < THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, APRIL 24, 1921—PART 3. AMUSEMENTS - Amusement s ~ The Photoplay AY R. ROCKETT. president of the Rockett Film Corporation, de- votes a newspaper column, in a recent message, to tell what |_hc motion picture has done for the world. His story is too long for | reproduction here, but some of the points he makes may be | ; summed up in justice to a popular favoritc that has been more used to 3 chiding than to praise in recent months. Mr. Rockett is. 6f course, strongly averse to .censorship, and but few who are aware of what cen- sorship means will be disposed to blame him. The argument seems irre- sistible that the general public is better fitted to determine what it should have than a small committee selected from its millions, cach imbued ‘with the spirit of a public moralist, and the fate of a picture often de- pending upon a majority of the board, which may be very small as well as very large. ¥ Ok kK UT the present object is to set forth what the photoplay has done. not what it should not do. Mr. Rockett's claims will be quoted in this article for the sake of brevity. * ok k% 3 SO TTHE moving picture has lengthened the lives of the old by giving them a_new interest in life. It puts them in touch with the world and renews their yvouth. It helps to keep the parents up to date with the ‘kiddies’ and keeps the family together in the evening. 1+ has brought the ends of the earth together and made the peoples oi the world. for « the first time. understand the needs of one another. This is the greatest influence for world-wide peace. It -has made a tour of the world poo- sible by staying at home, the photoplay taking the fan everywhere. It shows how things are made and gives us an understanding of the trc—! mendous cleverness of man, and people who habitually see pictures are | better informed than people who taboo them. i z * ok ok X | **TJOR a long time, the church locked upon the film as a devil. but it} i | | has been found a great medium for good. and now churches are nstalling projection machines so rapidly that theater managers have taken alarm. In education work its usefulness has no limit. It is in all large schools. colleges and universities, and has been found so much superior to the text book that educators look to it to revoluntionize cducationa] methods. Its use tends to quicken instruction. and. there- : fore. to shorten the school and college tcrm., thus bringing girls and boy $ into the channels of production at an earlicr age. the grand result being . to lighten the economic burden of the world and to greatly lessen pov- - v It has vastly aided the healing sciences by spreading broadcast : the knowledge of hygiene and sanitation, and is doing a great work of y . o 7 4 : instruction in surgery and the care of the sick and the insane. | 2 K : OS " helped win the world war by patriotic scatiment. and it was one of | ‘TALMADGE, g : o L RY : the most powerful factors in selling liberty bonds and in putting | : : : b THEBE : over the various drives for relief funds. | Metropolitars ; ‘ ; * % k% = 5 ST s e i s A 4166 5 5 o g AERE Nazimova Q@ PAULINE TREDERICK.> Rislto - was the first form of entertainment within the reach of the great < o ? ‘l d : Publx'c‘.
