—_ YS THE EVENING STAR, SATURDAY, JUNE ii, 1898-24 PAGES. SOME CYCLE CHAT ‘There ts a strong probability that before the present season Is over night racing will be introduced in this city, and the pubile will be given an opportunity to witness the steed of the men by electric light. The Park Cycle Club is securing bids on the matter, and some definite knowledge of what is to be done will be ascertained soon. Last year night racing was brought up. but the plan fell through, owing to the great cost of introducing the system. It was then proposed to erect poles for are lights at different intervals around the track, and also on the ground illuminate the plac but owing to the large number of lights that would be required, the cost precluded the introduction. This year it is contemplated to introduce an tanovation. The projectors propose us- ing several powerful search lights, placed at different nts, perhaps at the center of the ing. The full force of the ligat could be on the tracks and the bunch of s kept in view all of the time. d search lighis would un- doubtedly answer the pur, The plan, it is understood, has been introduced in one or two other cities in the country and has Another reason which will be an incentive for introducing night racing in this city Hes in the fact that racing after dark has been introduced in Baltimore and the venture has proven to be eminently successful. Baltimore is even @ poorer bicycle town than Washington so far as patronizing race meets is concerned, yet the Coliseum at that place, where night racing has been introduced, has drawn audience of over 5,000 people to a single Meet—equal to the largest number of peopie that have ever attended a loca! meet in the daytime in this city. The Park Cycle Club officials, before in- stalling such a system as described above, will hold a preliminary trial to test the advantages of the searchlights for the pur- pose. The event is expected to be held in a very short time, and a number of local racing men will be invited to ride several times around the track to test the merits of the new system. If the trial is deemed successful night racing will be regularly introduced. met with success. The long-looked-for match race between A. C. Moran of this city and W. G. Le Compte of Baltimore is scheduled to take place next Tuesday evening, and everybody is looking forward to a close and exciting race. The event was originally scheduled to come off on May 30, but for some reason it was postponed. The distance will be for twenty-five miles, and during the week both contestants met and signed articles of agreement governing the contest. The scene of the race will be on the C track at Baltimore, the affair being part of a night meet. While the local riders feel confident of the ability of the lecal man to win, it cannot be regarded as a case of walkaway for him. LeCompte is riding in excellent form, if reports be true, and in an exhibition ride he is said to have covered five miles in less than 10 minutes, the cor- rect time being 9.44 and a fraction. For ten mites LeCompte covered the distance in a little slower time than did Counselman in his ten-mile match race recently with B. T. Wrenn. This only serves to show that his condition is good, and that with good pac- ing. which he is quite likely to have, he will give Moran a very close tussle for the honor of winning the race. In connection with the race it is stated that Chairmar Mott of the league racing board has been looking into the matter. ie The chairman does not think that the ri ers have been living within the bounds of the lenzue amateur rules, and accord- ingly is proceeding with an investigation. He sezms inclined to the belief that the men have not 3 the rules strictly while training for the event. He also fers that the prize is something larger than that allowed by the rul for 3 teurs, or that the pacemakers may been paid to work for the occasion. chairman racing board, while not specifying oran-LeCompte race clusively. of the recent t four between Henry Sm! Roi . beth of Baltimore, and other ateur match events that sch to come off. appearances in this city A. ©. t appear to be in the best The fact that he did not secure a single first in three meets has taken as an indication that his con was far from perfect. This seems to be a mistake. [It is a well-known fact that since the been tratr beginning of the season he ng fer his coming twenty mile m. After working hard for that dista rdly any wonder that he was not much good in shorter distances with the other local amateurs, who ha practiced entirely for sprint haps the best indication of Moran's condition was his success Monday at Winche Va.. when he won all the ts on the prog! the half mile, and the open. Wilson nd each time he beat out his rival. ving Wilson to take md honers. This is the first time that Moran has been able to tinish at the head of the bunch. Again at Baltimore he suc- eeded Tuesday evening in winning the ne-mile om a good bunch, Griffin Halstead cetting second place. This clearly shows that Meran is in some sort ef con- dition, and he can be relied upon to make @ good showing. riders did extremely well at held the fore part of the week. The g meet on the Blue Ridge hester Moran and Wilson off the first and second prizes in n event, leaving the riders of that but trifling souvenirs of the meet ning race of the Coliseum track at Paltimore Moran won the only amateur @vent on the program, with Griffin Ha’s ead uring second A Baltimore rider got third place. In the only professional race on the program at the same meet W. F. Sims won easily, y Sims second, the tim 024-5. Tt seems as though the new Baltimore track is quite a fast course. Now that match races among amateurs seem to have taken a good hold on the lecal racing public, a good deal of interest Would be centered in ies of match races between Schad n, Wilsen and Counselman, for di: ranging trom ten to twenty-five m Counselman has snown his excellent abiltty at following a good pace. A series of events, the first be tween Moran and Wilson, the second t tween the winner of the race and Schade, and the third between the winner of the second event and Lee Counselman, would loubtedly arouse the greatest kind of usiasm. Scha might possibly not like in a middle distance r: Moran have both demonstrated to some extent In this direction with Counselman ought to be able to odor is net known if the of park has made any this direction, thougn it may be ne the advisability of carrying out , their flit and = ze manageme n conside such a One thing which Las eseay «l the notice of @ good mary patrons is the failure to hold the annual mile race for the District championsiip. This honor is now held by Wilson. For the past two years this cham- pionship has always been settled at th Decoration day meet, but this year the fact of the annual event seems to have been overlooked. This is the only local cham- Pionship ra © that has ever been held in this city, and there is more interest mani- fested in the outcome than one would or- Ginarily _magine. The race will probably be run off this year on the 4th of July, as it appears to be hardly likely that the con- test will be allowed to skip a year. One thing noticeable of late is the ap- pearance of a small American flag, which is both useful nd ornamental to the Wheelman when placed in front of the lamp. A number of riders have adopted the sche and the effect is quite pretty. ‘The flag enabies the rider to ascertain it the light is burning when riding in the evening. the reflection of the blaze show- ing clearly on the colors of the flag. With the use of this little patriotic embiem the rider can see the brilliancy of his lamp while seated in the saddle, saving a dis- mount. This is especially so in the case of some lamps, the construction of which renders it impossible for the rider to de- termine from the saddle whether the flame alive. ———_—_ Asserting His Privilege.
