Lewis and Dr. G. T. aueun: ex- ecutive committee. ‘A committee consisting of Dr. T. R. Stone, Joseph E. Willard and W. H. Saund- ers was’ appofnted to arrange for the at- tendance of the Washington alumni in a body at the closing exercises of the uni- versity this spring. An adjourned meeting was held in the banquet lmll, where speeches were made on the uil-absorbing current topic of Cuba. A‘toast was drunk to Gen. Fitzhugh Lee with great enthusiasm. Mr. Thomas Nelson Page was toastmas- } cvrrent. ter and elicited remarks from R. W. Hunt- er, Judge Shepherd, Civil Service Commis- sioner Procter and Richard Harding Davis. The latter spoke of his experience in Cuba and said ignorance characterized all that went to make up the Spanish soldier. For every man who was killed by the enemy, he said, there were fifteen men dying from disease occasioned by ignorance of sani- tary laws. He added that the soldiers know nothing of the use of guns, and in- variably fire before they have taken any sort of aim, which accounted, he thought, for the small number of men injured in battle. Among those present were Holmes Con- rad, Rev. Dr. Rev. Thompson I. Renick, Nat Ty- ler, R. Kemper, Joseph E. Willard of Vir- ginia, Senator Charles J. Faulkner, Sena- tor John W. Daniel, Senator Thomas H. Martin, Senator McLaurin, Representative I. 8. ‘wintams, Dr. Vaughn, Dr. James Star in regard to the speed of street cars, W. C. Hammond writes as follows: “Last Saturday I was on a car near the front end and noticed the motorman had his controller on at the lest notch going dcwn Louisiana avenue between 4% an? ist street at a great rate of ‘speed, and a bicyclist about thirty yards ahead of him. Had an accident happened to the bicyclist it would have been utterly impossible to have stopped the car before he had run over the man. The regulation speed could be easily obtained on that grade without “That is a daily occurrence in many sec# tions cf the city in addition to putting superfluous currents in the motor when starting the cars, which is 9 per cent of the cause for a “burn out.” Most of the mo- tormen have the controller dial on high speed mark after stopping before they get across the street. The resistance in the gear wheels is great, and the motors have more currents than they can consume, which causes the burn outs. The speed be- tween 4th and 1ith on East Capitol street ity a aft ci Central Labor Union was largely attended. President N. C. Sprague presided and Mr. J. M. Kreiter was secretary. A communication was read from W. E. Rausch, secretary-treasurer of the Inter- national Union of Bicycle Workers, calling attention to a grievance had by that organ- ization against a cash register manufactur- ing company, and requesting that the con- cern be informed by the Central Labor Union that the sale of the goods of the for- mer will be antagonized by the bodies af- filiated with the C. L. U. until such time as the cash register company makes a settle- ment satisfactory to the International Union of Bicycle Workers. The request Was granted, and the secretary was direct- ed to inform the alleged offending company of the proposed action of the Central La- bor Union, and alsg to state that a commit- tee would be appointed to walt upon the local dealers and merchants and ask their support In bringing the register company to terms. The special committee appointed at the last meeting of the Central Labor Union to investigate a report that non-union work- men were being empleyed in connection with the work then in progress at Conven- uen Hall for the Masonic fair, reported that the conditions under which the work was done was satisfactory. The report was adopted and the committee was discharged from further consideration of the subjec Secretary Kreiter-read a letter which he had prepared at the request of the local of the National Alliance of organization Theatrical wird Employes, and which will, it is expected,
