14 HOW MANY RIDE WHEELS amber of Bicycles Used in the United States Some Estimate as High as Ten Mil- Hon — Yearly Product of the Factories. The question of the number of wheels ridden in the United States is being resur- rected, and various estimates are being made. While some place the number at about 5,000,000, there are others who place it at 10,000,000. Several papers have pub- lished articles which gives the number at something like 9,000,009. This estimate represents one bicycle to every eight residents. That such an esti- mate is hardly fair can be judged from one fact. The bulk of the bicycle riding popu- lation live in the cities. In a majority of large cities the ratio of riders should be greater than one to elght, in order to make allowance for the greater ratio which must exist in the country regions. There are few cities in which one out of every eight of the population rides or owns a bicycle. Washington may be one of the few cities in which the ratio may be about that fig- ure, but even then there is a good deal of doubt of this. A Chicago paper, which started this large estimate, has this to say to back up its as- sertion: Expests estimate that at the close of last season there were 9,000,000 bicycles owned and used by individual riders in the United States. If the national population is estimated at 70,000,000 this would show one bicycle in use for every eight persons in the nation, including women, octogenari- ans and babies. As the very old and very young @ not ride the bicycle, it follows that the proportion of wheels to population is greater than the figures given. Probably one in five or six would be nearer the truth. The same experts say that there will be over 1,000,000 bicycles sold during the com- ing season. Last year there were between 650,000 and 700,000. wheels_. manufactured and sold in this country, including all grades and-makes. It is. conservatively es- timated that the increased output in 1898 over 1897 will be fully 50 per cent, and that practically the whole of this immense ava- Janche of wheels will pass into the hands of individual riders before the end of the season. This will mean 1,000,000 bicycles added to the number already in use, or, in rough figures, about 10,000,000 wheels, after making fair allowance for exchanges and duplications. Two factors are responsible for the com- ing violent sporadic outbreak of the cycling fever. The first is the return of the general good times, especially in the rural districts. The second and main factor is the slash in prices which has brought the ownership of a wheel within the reach of hundreds of thousands who formerly considered the cost too great. No feature in the bicycle trade for years can compare with the sweeping reductions in price for the season of 1898. This applies not merely to former models or second-hand wheels, but to the brand-new product.of the best factories. As one prominent manufacturer puts it, it is to be a bicycle year for the people and of diminished profits for the middlemen. There will be fewer agents in the field, fewer showmen. and consequently less com- missions and fewer salaries to add to the cost of a wheel after it leaves the factory. ‘The fact that cheap bicycles fill a popular want fs also attested by the immense num- ber of new factories which will this year turn out nothing but popular-priced wheels, renning from $25 to $50. ‘There will, of course, be standard makes still in the mar- ket with all.the high-priced embellish- ments, costing the buyer from $125 down- ward. - The sales of these will be to a certain class’ of buyers, as “before, who are care- less as to the price of a wheel if it bears a certain name and guaranty. But the sale of high-priced wheels witli not conflict in any way with the tremendous new mar- ket for eheap wheels among those who never rode befcre. but who will this year join the cycling army. Serviceable wheels, even if not up to concert pitch, may be ob- tained this: year frem $10 upward, if the second-hand wheels and old makes are in- cluded. The range from $125 to $10 is wide enough to suit every taste or condition of purs: ‘There ts a genuine cycling boom in every corner of the Wnited States. From. the south, where the roads are already bare end hard, there come reports of the largest business in bieycies since the craze took bessession of the country. All over the West, the northwest and the southwest the Teports from bicycle agents are that farm- e wheels than ever. be- This spread of the cyclin, among the farmii ate haa ng communities is a untque feature of the present and past senecne In all the states where there have been recent goo crops the sales of wheels in the rural districts promise to be phenomenal during the present year. Farmers are now using the bicycle freely for social inter, course, marketing and the various uses Ine eldental to large farms. This feature 1s cons sidered the best guaranty for goods in the future, as the farmers who take up the wheel either for business or pleasure soon get after the county supervisors with Sharp stick if there are defects in the reads timates figure: the secretary of the national Veard of trade of cycle manufacturers, Mr, Wardrop,’ which places the total number gf wheels ridden in the country to be near 3.500.000. These: figures seem to be much Bearer the correct number, especially in view of the fact that about a year and a half ago it was conceded by nearly all thorities that the total number of bi-+ excles in use in the United States was something like 1,500,000. As secretary to the national organfzation of cycle manu. facturers, Mr. Wardrop has unusual facili- ties for reaching the nearest correct esti- mate. He is perhaps the best fitted of any individual to make such a guess. Prior to assuming the office he held the position of editor on a well known cycling journal. which makes him have as good an insight in the bicycle business as any individual cculd. The idea of 9,000,000 bicycles being in use in this country ‘is laughed at by. the secretary, who says that there {# scarcely any more than that number of Dieycles in-use in the wholé world. About eight years’ ago Mr. Wardrop be- gan his work of compiling annually a rec- erd of the bieycle product. At that time the number of cycie makers was small. Even then, Lowever, the figures of the makers themselves could not be accepted as reliable, so Mr. Wardrop sct about checking up in anotzer way. The number of tire, of chain, spoke and ball makers was much smaller even than that of the wheel producers. At that {ime two or three firzns in each cf these Ines put out prac- tically all the material of this kind tha was used. A maker of chains has not the reasons for misstating the amount of his precuct that a wheelmaker has. Chaina carry over from one year to another better than bicycles. The fashions in them have not been so variable. The same ts truer ef balls for bearings and spokes, but ap- Pies most strongly to tubing. By taking tkese several products separately. and ob- taining the total, output of each, Mr. Wardrop fornd he could readily calculate the numter of bicycles they would mak> and cach of the several calculations fur- nished a counter check to the others. For instance, the number of feet of tub- ing used in a bicycle varies very Httie in various constructions. After making the estimate from the tubing product, Mr. Wardrop figured it out again from the chain product, which ig also simple, be- c of there being one chain for every bicycle. The number of extra ones used on account of breakage is trivial, as broken lirks are simply replaced. The point in conrection with Mr..Wardrop’s figures is that he worked soxaccurately that the resulting estimate.from each of the prod- ucts named agreed with the estimates form- ed from the others so closely that the cor- rectness of the figures was assured. One of the best checks he ‘had, outside of the tubing, ball and chain makers, was the serew cutting machine makers. The pro- duction of machinery such as used in cyci¢ factories can very easily be kept track of by those in the trade, and Mr. Wardrop's _ work was all done personally through con- fidential talks. Last year the machinery makers sold hardly any machines at home, outside of ball-grinding machinery. Most all of the bicycle machinery made was sold abroad. Mr. Wardrop states that the total Amer- jean product of bicycles in the lest six years, 1802-1897 inclusive, amounts to about 3,300,000, and the United States has bee: producing as many as all the rest of the world collectively. “The estimates of eath year, formed by Mr. Wardrop by the meth- od described, are: 1882, 150,000; 1893, 200,- 000; 1894, 300,000; 1895, 600,000; 1806, 1,200,- 000; 1897, 900,000. From this it will be seen that there was a falling off last year, although the popular belief was that the Production exceeded that of 1896. In 1896, When the high-water mark was reached, Mr. Wardrop declares that the United States turned out more than twice as many bicycles as England and the European countries together. Previous to 1802 Mr. Wardrop says he thinks not more than half a miilion machines had been made. .This seems to effectually dispose of the nine million estimate, which, if it were true, and the production was continuing at the same rate, would mean, according to Sec- retary Wardrop, that the home market for bicycles would be exhausted in two years. As it is, Mr. Wardrop says we have hard- ly begun to scrape the surface off the home market. Assuming that only 10 per cent of the entire population is eligible to ride, that would be seven million, and in all these years not more than half that number of heycles has been built. What. proportion of the total number built are now in use is hard to say. Mr. Wardrop declines to speculate on uncertainties, and will give no opinion on the number of persons now riding, ner on the amount of capital invest- ed in bicycle manufacture. Regarding the number of wheels that will be built this year, Mr. Wardrop thinks it will be over a million, and will be equal to or in excess of the high-tide figures of 1896. His reasons for this opinion are based on the increased popularity of the bicycle for utilitarian uses us well as for recreation, and the fact that a boom in sules will probably result from the drop In prices which has brought bi- cycles within the reach of classes that be- fore could not consider them. en AUCTION SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &c.
