A special to the Faltimore American from ‘ewport News, Va., yesterday, says: A From'nent real estate owner announced this morning that he was authorized to state that the Havemeyers were ready to establish an immense beet sugar factory and refinery in this city, provided that the farmers would guarantee to plant at least 30,009 acres of beets per year. “It rests entirely with the farmers,” said this gentle- man, “whether or not these great sugar kings will lecate here or elsewhere. They kave had representatives here in their He terest. The ground has been carefully look- ed over, and they are satisfied that the city o‘fers many super‘or inducements for the jecation of such an enterprise as they are Getermined to establish somewhere in this section of the south; but , they must have beets, and a lot of THE EVENING STAR, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1897-24 PAGES, DISTRICT EPWORTH LEAGUE First Seesion of Annual Meeting at Hamline Dr. Lucien Clark Talks of “Herocs ‘Wanted”—Rev. McDowell’s Address en “Trained for Service.” ‘The seventh annual convention of the Ep- worth League of the District of Columbia began last evening at Hamline Church, cor- ner of 9th and P streets northwest, Rev. W. R. Stricklen, D. D., pastor. Mr. W. S. Dew- hirst, president of the District League, oc- cupied the chair. After a song service led by Mr. William J. Palmer, with Mr. O. D. Swett as organist, Rev. Dr. L. B. Wilson, Lresiding elder of Washington district, Bal- timore conference, conducted devotional services, following which Rev. Dr. Lucien poate pastor of Foundry Church, delivered an address on “Heroes Wanted.” After stating that in most instances the fe of a person was influenced by his course of reading, Dr. Clark said, in part: “One who has for himself studied the , Bible sees before him high and noble char- acters and ambitions. A true hero is the highest type of a man. There is a great deal of spurious manhood and womanhood in the world. It would take a strong elec- tric light to find a true man in some por- tions of our modern society. There are more worthless men than women; there are more women than men in the Epworth League and in the church; nevertheless the material cut of which true heroines are rade is not so plentiful as we might wish it to be.” Birds and Pug Dogs. Dr. Clark then read aloud a letter written by a young lady to a lord bishop in Eng- land, in reply to a request from the latter that the young lady engage in some kind of Christian work. The writer of the letter stated in detail how she was engaged from early morning until late at night, and ap- pealed to the lord bishop to know if he thought, after what she had told him, she had time to do anything else. A part of the young woman's duties was stated by her to be to feed the canaries and parrots, and Dr. Clark said he believed that if some of the young ladies in society in Washing- ton were asked to engage in Christian work they would not only reply that they have canaries and parrots to feed, but also a pug dog to look after. : Continuing, the speaker said: “We can easily see the need of a hero in the days of Daniel and Elijah, and some of the other prophets, and again in the days of Wesley and Asbury and other pieneers of Meth- odism, when bravery was required to stand up for omfe’s belief in the doctrines taught by the Methodists, but ft is more difficult to realize that there is still a demand for heroes, “We need,” said eaker, spirit to be true Christians. Jesus said ‘Fol- low me,’ and if we are to be Christians we must follow Him even if we have to en- counter opposition and reproach.” The speaker instance s in support of this statement, and said: “There are Christians who are greater heroes than Wellington. There are opportun for heroes ani heroin ‘Training for Daty. “a_ heroic Rev. W. L. McDowel! of Baltimore made an address on “Trained for Service.” He urged that it was impossible for the church to get the highest type of service from its followers unless they were trained for the work, no matter how earnest and kcyal the Christian might be. The chair announced the appointment of two ccmmittees, as follows: Resolutions—Messrs. J. S. Hough, J. F. Engle and J. S. Credentials- Cc. Eldrich, S. A. Tke second day's proceedings of the con- Xention began this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. The program for the day and evening was printed in The Star of last evening. The convention will close with a junior rally tomorrow evening. ae eng Ae WHOLESALE PRODUCE MARKET.
