The horse was owned and rid- den by a farmer named Ed Brown of Ca- hokia. He had business alout the corner, and concluded to tie the animal to one of the iron posts in front of the Adete build- ding. A passing stret car frightened the animal, aad, jerking back, he snap;ei the cast-iron post in two. The horse did not run away, but, finding itself loose. began to paw and scrare at the walk. In seme man- ner his left foot became caught in the hole made by the broken pest, and, in attempt- ing to extricate himse'f, the leg was pushed down to the knee joint. The animal fell over, but remained in such a position that the leg was not otherwise injured. A num- ber of gentlemen, including Drs. Wilnelmj and Wiggins, A. K. Johnson and Postm: ter Fekete, did all in their power to reliev the animal, but to no purpose. Richard Lee, a blacksmith, happened along, and, going into the cellar of tre building, jerked off the horse's shoe, and thereby permitted the men above te pry up the leg.
