Base Ball Contests. CURRENT NOTES OF . SPORT —_——_ + Record of the Clubs. Today's Paltimore Sun has the following to say of yesterday's Baltimore-Washing- ton gam If the Washington team shad heen playing ball all the season us it played against the champions yesterday at Union Park the name of the national capital would now be figuring in the first division of the percent- e record, McJames was in the box and pitched a fine game, and he was supported by the fastest sort of good fielding. Only the great pitching of Dr. “Arlie’ Pond, pecially the latter part of the game, and his excellent support, with timely drives by Kelley and Quinn, enabled Baltimore to win, The crowd which greeted the three-time champions after their absence and their heroic fight against misfortunes that would have swamped any other club was paitry in numbers. Only 2,000 persons were at the game, notwithstanding the fact that the club had been absent a week and will leave again tonight for the west for almost a month. Those who attended yesterdays game saw a beautiful contest. It was, first of all, a battle between the two young collegians and “M.D.’s,” Pond and McJames. It was pretty nearly a drawn battle, each being hit safely eight times for a total of eleven bases. But Pond had the better oi the argument because he was dier and gave only one base on balls to james’ four. He was cooler and more effective in tight places, and he kept getting more and more effective as the game pro- gressed. First blood was scored by_ the Orioles in the second inning, when O'Brien made the circuit on his pretty hit to right, Reitz’s out, his steal of third and Farreil’s wild throw There was a funny incident in connection with O'Brien’s hit.
