He has been in the employ of the District for a longer period then any other driver. His record is spotless, and during the twenty-one years of service Anderson was off duty because of sickness thirty days only. —$—— Suit for Maintenance. A petition has been filed in the Equity Court by Nora C. Southwick, praying that Lands churches are pro- lomestic, mining in purposes are her husband, Harvey J. Southwick, be re- quired to contribute to her support and maintenance. She also prays that restrained from entering the house guples, and from in eny he she re- ec 3 er the first volume of 200 letters which were suppressed by the editors of Napoleon's correspondence, issued in 1869, as not cal- culated to Increase the glory of the great French emperor. The volume includes: some heated family letters, and some vig- crously worded epistles to Fouche and Dubois, the ministers of police and war, respectfvely. A letter to Marshal Soult in 1804 shows that Napoleon did not hesitate in adopting any means of obtaining con- fessions. He orders Soult to arrest a fish- erman suspected of communicating with the British, adding: “If he refuses to speak, you must squeeze his thumbs in a musket lock.” This was a method adopted to ¢ confessions in the cases of persons pected of espionage. Napoleon's list of persons to be arrested was endless, and his abuse of Madam Stael was unceasing. Estimate of Prussian Princes, Learning in 1807, through Marshal Vic- tor, that Prince Augustus of Prussia was intriguing against him in Berlin, Napoleon wrote: “I am not astonished, because he has a dull mind and has spent his time courting Madame de Stael at Coppot (Switzerland), and, of course, could only pick up bad habits with her. Send word to him that at the first mischievous remark he utt you will lock him up in his castle and Madame de Stael to console him. There no men so cringing as these princes of Prussia.” . Writing to Talleyrand in 1808 that prin of the former reigning family of Sy were about to arrive at Vallen poleon said: “You may send for Madame Talleyrand and four or five persons. If the Prince of Asturias should form an at- tachment for a pretty person, it will be no drawback, as it would supply another means of ‘watching him.” Talleyrand’s Delicate Another letter from Napoleon to Talley- rand reads: “Your mission is honorable enough, to re- ceive three illustrious personages and amius» them, and is quite in keeping with your character.” When Napoleon received the news, June 11, 1899, that the pope had excommuni- cated him, he wrote: “I spare the pope no longer. He ts a ray- ing madman and must be locked up.” Some scolding letters to his brother, Prince Jerome, are interesting. When Jerome was outwitted by the Austrian General Kienmayer, he still boasted of his tract Mission. strate; plans, in an inflated order of the day. This caused Napoleon to write as fol- lows: “I seen your order of the day, which makes you the laughing stock of Austria, Germany and France. Haven't you 4 friend about to tell you plain truths? You, a king and a brother of the emperor. These are ridiculous titles. in time of war you must be a soldier and nothing but a sul- Cier. You must have no minister, no diplo- matic corps, no state. You must camp with the vanguard, be day and night on horseback and march in the van to pick up news, or remain in one’s harem. Plain Talk to Jerome. “You make war like a satrap. Is it from me, good God, that you learned that from I, who, with an army of 2 men, keep at the head of my skirmishers? “The people are provoked with you. Kienmayer, with 12,000 men, has laughed at you and your ridiculous pretensions, and has slipped away from you and fallen upon Junot. You have a lot of preten- sions, some little mind and a few good qualities, but these are marred by your fa- tuity and your extreme presumption a have no knowledge of the fitness of things. Leave off being ridiculous, send your diplo- matic corps back to Cassel, have no bag- gage, and wage war like @ young soldier wishing to carn glory and reputacion. Try to deserve the rank you have reached and the esteem of France and Europe, wno are watching you, and, by God, do right and speak in a seemly manner if you can.” ~~ +0e+ — WHITE AND NEGRO MATED.
