Evening Star Bureau, No. 529 King street, Bell Telephone, No. 106, ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 8, 1897. With the coming of summer and the consequent dust on King street comes the annual complaint of merchants and others doing business along this thoroughfare of the clouds of dust wafted into their places by the sweeping of the street by the “hand brigade.’ e This street is only swept once a week, and that on Saturday morning, when trade is at its best, and it, of course, greatly inconveniences everybody, as doors have to be closed and windows chinked to keep the dus: out of the merchandise. The streets are swept with a hand broom. No watering cart being provided the sprinkling is done with a small watering pot. Many times have the citizens applied to the authorities to have the evil corrected, but it has been of no effect. It has been suggested that a modern street sweeper and watering cart could be purchased for a@ small sum, and that when the horse was not in use on street work it could be used to haul a patrol wagon, of which the city is also sadly in need. Another effort will be made before the new city council to procure the desired modern ap- pliances. How Mr. Von Scheidt of Buffalo rides his Eclipse. Another National Guard Company Or- dered Disbanded. An echo of the recent stir-up in the Dis- trict cf Columbia National Guard was heard this afternoon, when a general order was issued from headquarters disbanding Com- pany C, 4th Battalion, known as the Camp- bell Light Infantry. This action was the direct result of a special inspection of Com- pany C, 4th Battalion; Company D, 5th Battalion, and Company C, 6th Battalion, held Monday last, to determine their rela- tive merits, as one of the three had to go. It was a case of the survival of the two fittest. Capt. Francis S. Hodgson, First Lieut. Charies H. Danforth and Second Lieut. George W. Byron of the disbanded com- pany are transferred to the supernumerary fork. The chain is roller joint or ball bearing—noise- less—and at least two-thirds of the friction reduced.
