26 THE EVENING STAR, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1896-28 PAGES. IN THE CHURCHES From present appearances it would seem that Christmas day this year Is to be more generally observed by the churches in this city than ever. Several of the churches, which heretofore have obeerved Christmas either on the Sunday following or Sun- day tefore, will this year have their ser- vices on Christmas day. A feature grow- ing into popularity among the Sunday schools ts that of having cantatas as @ special form of Christmas entertainments. The church choirs are, as usual, prepar- ing music for the occasion and some of them are rehearsing very elaborate pro- ‘ams. Fast June the Protestant Episcopal Mis- ston of the Good Shepherd, located at 313 H street northeast, was transferred by St. Mark’s Church to the charge of Rev. Dr. McKim of Epiphany Church. Dr. McKim secured as a minister for the mission Rev. Herbert Scott Smith, who had just grad- uated from Harvard. Within the past few days a new and larger building has had to be leased at 40S H street northeast. The building was originally intended as a stcre, so that the first floor therefore serves very well as a chapel. It has been fitted up with pews, chancel furniture and other equipments, so that regular services and the Sunday school are now being, held there. The room has a seating capacity of about a hundred and fifty and the con- gregation now numbers very close to that. Rev. Mr. Smith last week organized a Brotherhoed of St. Andrew Chapel in con- nection with the mission. This makes the twenty-seventh chapter in the diocese of Washington. Rev. Mr. Smith {fs the son of Rev. Dr. Smith, pastor of Mount Ver- non M. E. Church, Baltimore. No word has as yet been recetved in this city from Rev. Father John Gloyd, who ac- ccmpanied Bishop Keane to Rome. Dur- ing Lis absence the services and parochial work are being carried on by the two as- sistants, Revs. J. F. McGee and D. J. Staf- ford. Father McGee also finds time to collect funds for the new Church of the Sacred Heart, and he is succeeding very well. Mr. William P. Lockwood has been made superintendent of the afternoon Sunday school at Trinity Episcopal Church. Last Sunday five officers were publicly in- stalled at the North Presbyterian Church, N street between 9th and 1th, by the pas- tor, Rev. Charles B. Ramsdell, D. D. The officers, who were recently elected, were as follows: Elders, William Selby and Dr. M. C. Bennett, and deacons, W. M. Pum- phrey, William J. McClellan and Joseph H Fiske. The Presbyterian Ministerial Association at its meeting Monday morning Mstened to addresses by the Revs. Arthur J.B. Brown and John R. Davies, and Rev. Mr. Bannerman. The teachers of the Sunday school of the Keller Memorial Church have decided to hold weekly meetings each Wednesday evening for the study of the lessons. A recent quarterly meeting of the Chris- tian Womar jonary Society was held at the Vermont Avenue Christian Church. The program of the meeting was as fol- lows: General topic, ‘What Need We Most Money or Consecration?” (1), Mrs. Ellis of the Ninth Street Money,” Mrs. Johns; ; .’ Mrs. E. G. Siggers of the Vermont Avenue. At the close of the meet- ing a lunch was served, and then in the af- ternoon the L es’ Aid Society of the Ver- mont Avenue Church held a meeting and the winter's work was talked over. Th deficit of $527.28 in the current ex- es of the Central Union Mission has 1 made up. Half of the sum was con- ated by a prominent local minister on ndition that the mission obtain the other half, which it did. ning next Thursday evening Rev. The Building has been slightly furnished, the Sunday school has been organized and Mr. Barnes preaches Sunday evenings. If it can be arranged it is likely that the mis- sion will be under the charge of the Fif- teenth Street Church. > It was expected that the celebration of the diamond jubilee of St. Peter's Church would be observed duting the holidays, but owing to a delay in receiving the altar it will not take place until about the middle of January. Rev. C. B. Ramsdell and Mr. Charles Lyman, members of the board of trustees of New Windsor College from the pres- bytery of Washington city, report that during the first term, which has just closed, the receipts have fully met the current ex- penses. It will extend 52 feet on B street and 113 feet on 4th street, and will be built of brick with a base of limestone. The esti- mated cost Is $25,000. pace ices CALIFORNIA’S HISTORY. an Accident Prevented It From Becoming Territory of the Czar. From the San Franetseo Chronicle. Nothing, perhaps, but the accident of the establishment of the Hudson's Bay Com- pany and the Northwest Fur Company saved northern California from becoming a Russian province. Virtus Behring closed a life of adventure by planting the Russian flag in Alaska in 1741. Four years later Sitka was founded. A quarter of a century elapsed before the Spaniards undertook their first northward advance from San Diego and Monterey. If the English fur hunters had not intervened between the two, Spaniards and Russian would have gravitated toward each other, and in that case the chances are that the Golden Gate and the Sacramento, would have been the dividing line between them. Until the close of the eighteenth century hunting and fishing on the Alaskan shores were conducted by individual enterprise. The fur seal and sea otter were hunted by Siberians, who sailed the stormy seas of the north in craft sewn together with thongs and calked with moss. They be- longed to the primitive order of savages, among whom robbery, outrage and murder were the ordinary events of the day, and at whose hands the meek Aleut bent his neck to the knife as the inoffensive Peru- vian had crouched before the countrymen of Pizarro a century before. In the last year of the eighteenth century order was established in Russian America. A com- pany, in which the members of the imperial family and the Muscovite nobility were shareholders, was founded on the plan of the British East India Company and the Hudson Bay Company. Exclusive rights of hunting and fishing were conferred upon it. Its jurisdiction within its territory was as broad as that of the czar himsélf. The Aleuts and their neighbors held their lives and property at its mercy. They were not only slaves, but no slave code threw over them a semblance of protection. Over this corporation was set Gen. Baranoff, whom Astor's agent, Hunt, described as a hyper- borean veteran, overflowing with hospital- ity, who, if his guests do not drink raw rum and boiling punch as strong as sulphur, will insult them when he gets drunk, which will be shortly after he sits down to the tabie. He served the company faithfully for thirty years, and then was thrown over to starve at the age of seventy-two. Glad Tidings. From the Chicago Record. ‘Any church news, Julia?” “Church news?
