24 PATHE HVONING.BWAR, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY. 22, 1896“2WENIWLEGUR PACES, SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA, The incorporators of the Capital Railway Company, through Messrs. A. E. Randle and Augustus Burgdorf, have called a meeting for next week to elect officers and Prepare for commencing the work of con- Struction. It fs not expected that much will be done in the latter direction at that time, but it is recessary to inaugurate ac- tual operations before March 2, as othet- wise the present charter will lapse. The bill granting permission to build the road requires that work must be begun within one year from the approval of the act, and this took plece March 2, 1895. The discussion was led by Professor Amiss, after which Professor S. A. Layman gave his reasons for Lcirg an advocate of free books. Five- Minute speeches were made on the same subject by Messrs. E. A. Zeigler, Frank Watkins, Mrs. Viers, Misses Brooke and Btabier. ——— BROOKLAND. The celebration in honor of George Wash- ington’s birthday at the Soldier's Home school yesterady was of a very patriotic character. The “Washington axioms” which the children had prepared were re- cited with force and understanding. The songs by the school, including “America,” “Columba, the Gem ef the Ocean,” and “The Star Spangied Banner,” were sung with spirit. Washington's farewell address was read by the pupils and the entire pro- gram was alive with patriotism. it is hardly probable that any school in the city made a better showing yesterday than did the Brookland school. Taking into ¢onsideration the fact that the school only had been preparing for this since Monday, both teachers and pupils deserve com. Mendation. The fourth, fifth, sixth, sev- nth cnd eighth grades took part, and ev- ery pupil was decorated with a flag. The most unique number on the pt m was the march of the states, first the thirteen colonies, then the states wero added ac- cording to their admission into the Union until the number forty-five was reached. Miss Bailey was tastefully dressed in the stars and stripes, representing Columbia. ‘The states were draped in flags, each with @ crown on the head, or a shield, bearing the name of the state represented. Little Arthur Godfesy made a perfect District of Columbia in his blue and yellow continental suit. There were readings by Fred. God- frey, “Lexington,” by Edmond Wolfe, “Washington's Training;” Merle Barton, “Washington as a Guide for Youths,” and Elwood Bonsall, “Washington's Resigna- tion,” and recitations by Hazel Witten, “Washington as a Leader; Louls Olm, “Our Flag is There; Kathleen Noel, “On- werd, Flag of Glory Flying; Roy Wolfe, “Banner Land of Progress;” Rose Mc- ‘a, “The Mt. Vernon Tribute,” and “rown Our Washington,” by Mamfe Ham- ition. “The Little Hatchet Story,” a reci- tation, by Marie Howe, was thoroughly amusing, and the fact that she was com- pelled to respond to an encore proved it was duly appreciated. After the crowning ef Washington by Mamie Hamilton the school saluted the flag. There were several lotic songs sung by the school in a spirited manner. There were two address- es, the opening one by Mr. Chas. G. Lynch nd the ott r, Frank T. Howe. Both spoke of Washington's life and character, and what 2 sood model it Is for every youth to follow. larly of the appropriateness of the occasion and of the sity of instilling into the hearts of the school children the love of nity and spirit of patriotism. Both kers were heartily applauded. Every- thing passed off pleasantly, much to the gratiication of the teachers, Mr. @. K. Finckel, Miss L. P. Mailey and Miss Given. The hall was crowded to the door with parents, friends and children, so that those Who participaied felt that their work was appreciated. rie Mattin, Where she has returned from hes been for some nd ts now with her y taken a house in the time for her hesith, a mae er, Who has recent seuth, the Epworth League of the TVrookland M.
