In spite of the denials, official and semi- official, that have been made from many quarters, the repgrt of the offensive and defensive alliance between Russia and Tur- key, which was printed in The Star Thurs- day, is not viewed with entire incredulity. Special dispatches published by the London newspapers from the European capitals, notably from Berlin, Paris and Vienna, show a tendency to admit the possibility that a Russo-Turkish treaty has been con- eluded. It is pointed out with obvious plausibility that Turkey’s impecuniosity may have driven her to seek an alliance as a@ means of obtaining a loan, as was the case recently with China. If such a treaty has in fact been concluded, it ts certain that the fact will be kept secret until the last moment. So'far there has been no au- thentic confirmation of the report from any quarter. There was a called meeting of the city school board held last night at Peabody school building to investigate the rumors that have been in circulation in this city about Mr. Wm. H. Greenwell, associate Frincipal of Washington School. Col. Francis L. Smith presided over the meeting. Mr. Greenwell appeared before the board and denied the charges in toto. The board decided to take no action in the matter at present, and adjourned until next Thursday night, when all persons who have charges to prefer will be heard. Funeral Service. The funeral of the late E. Chauncey Davis took place from his home on North Alfred street yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. The funeral services were conduct- ed by the Rev. J. H. Butler of the Baptist Church, and were attended by the Odd Fel- lows, Red Men and the Friendship and Third Virginia Regiment Drum Corps, and a large number of the friends of the de- ceased. The pallbearers were Messrs. A. J. llinger, Charles Kans, V. E. Dement, A. J. Mulling, Lewis McDaniel and M. S. Keen. The.interment was in the Methodist Protestant cemetery. Captured at Last. Charles Winkfield, colored, who has been evading the police since the 11th of No- vember last, was yesterday afternoon ar- rested by Officer Young on a warrant charg- ing him with having assaulted and beaten 4 colored woman named Martha Washing- ton. Last night, at a special session’ of the police court, he was brought before Mayor Thompson, but the case had evidently gone wrong, as the woman said that he was only playing with her. Officer Young testi- fled-that upon the night of the 1ith of No- vember there was a genuine fight between the two. The mayor imposed a fine of $5 or thirty days on the gang. They Got the Fruit. TRe boys in the neighborhood of Fairfax and Wilkes streets yesterday thought that Christmas had come again, judging from the amount of fruit, etc., at their disposal, for the New York Fruit Store wagon broke down at the corner of Fairfax and Wilkes streets, scattering bananas and other fruits, with which it was loaded, in all di- rections, and the boys were not slow in taking advantage of it. Notes. The charitable societies of the churches are now having very h€avy demands made upon them for aid. Mrs. Niles and her daughter, Miss Violet, who have been the guests of Mrs. W.eB. Daingerfield of this city, left for Washing- ton yesterday evening, where they will spend the winter.
