W. Brown’s block, were burned out. The loss will amount to $80,000, insured for less than half. The Young Men’s Christian Association building at Nashville was destroyed by fire at an early hour yesterday. The editorial room of the Banner, in the same bullding, was burned, and the Banner building ad- joining was damaged. ‘The Associated Press room in the ¥, M. C. A. building was de- stroyed. The loss of the ¥. M. C. A. is $69, insurance, $25,000, THE NEW YORK SITUATION. Chairman Babcock Says It’s Too Early for Estimates. Chairman Babcock of the republican con- gressional committee returned to Wash- ington today from a trip to New York, where he has been in attendance upon a meeting of the republican national com- mittee. “The political situation in New York is in an embryo state,” said Mr. Babcock to c Star reporter today, “and both parties are alike in this respect. I can compare the situation to nothing better than a pot of molasses which is on the stove boiling for candy. It is in a seething condition, and it is difficult to tell at this point whether :t will be burnt or not. It is tco early to make estimates about New York. “There is one thing which is apparent, however, and that is the democratic oppo- sition to Hill. You can see it cropping out on all sides—a vigorous, aggressive and powerful movement. Of course Mr. Hil perceives it and is doing all in his power to check and counteract it.” +e. Agal it Living Pictures. The Women's Christian Temperance Union at Chicago has entered upon a cru- sade agairst objectionable theatrical bill beards and the exposure before the foot- lights of scantily clothed women. This ac- tion was determined upon Thursday at the monthly meeting of the Central W. C. T. U., when the report of a subcommittee, con- sisting of Mrs. L. A. Hagans and others, was read and adopted. The committee made a tour of the Chicago variety theaters and concert halls and told shocking stories at the meeting Thurrday. As a result counsel has been employed and a crusade against living pictures will be begun. or The Heir Suspected of Murder.
