The police re@eived a telegram last evening from Gloucester, N. J., giving information of the arrest there of the colored man Clayton Howard, who is wanted here for the killing of Edward C. Atwell, the Baltimore and Ohio freight brakeman, at Trinidad. The marder occurred early Saturday morning, May 28, while Clayton and some male and female companions were returning from Ivy City. As published at the time, Atwell, whose home was near Leesburg, had been in the employ of the railrond company for only a few days when he was shot and killed. He had been on a train brought from Benning to Trinidad and his day’s work wasover. With other members of the crew he was awaiting the arrival of the “owl train” from Baltimore when the negroes came along. The latter had been at the honse of a colored woman named Jennie | Peti Enuella and she was in the party. There was some talk between one of the railroad men and a member of a party of colored people, in which Atwell did not participate, but when the alleged murderer retarned he selected Atwell ‘as the man who had said something to one of the women in the party. Their meeting was of short duration, asin less than three minutes Atwell had fallen mortally wounded. He died ‘8 few minutes afterward, just as he reached the depot. Being a racing man he naturally went where there were fast horses. At one time he was at Clifton and later he went to Gloucester, where he was captured. Detective Boyd was at Gloucester some days ago and while there he gave the authorities a minute description of the fan, and the officers there promised to keep a sharp lookout for him. Upon receiving word of thearrert the detective Jef on the first a for Glowcester. A inspector MeCathran received a dispate from Detective Boyd today stating that the prisoner was willing to return as soon as the Teqnirition arrives there. As the requisition cannot be procured until Monday the alleged murderer will probably not be brought here be- fore Tuesday. = The Y. M. C. A. Program.
