Republican Senators who went to Minnespo- lis are slowly beginning to put in an appearance. Senators Pettigrew, Hansbrough and Dubois were at their desks today, but they did little else than talk of the great gather- ing and its lnbors. None of them were enthusiastic Harrison men when they started out, but association and lots of fresh air bave so changed their aystema that each of them is fully satisfled with the ticket. “There is no question about President Harri- son securing the electoral vote of Idaho,” said Senator Dubois to a Stan reporter this afver- noon. “Idaho will not be alone, either. in that jon. The entire west will support the President because he is arepublican President. The west has no other friends than the republican ‘Democrats would give ns free lead and would refuse to survey our lands or to do anything else which ‘would aesist the young states in their growth or rr rity. PiNT bere soem several men mentioned as being the backbone of the administration fight at Minneapolis,” continued the Senator, “but one man who did more than any other one man has been neglected. I am talking about Tom Carter of Montana. re were none shrewder than he, none more active, none more successful. If he had had charge of the Blaine campaign the ticket would not be Harrison and Reid.” 57 Gea SENATORS GOING TO CHICAGO. But They Are Not Yet Certain Who They ‘Will Work For. Fully ® dozen democratic Senators will leave the city for Chicago within a day or two, but who these same Senators will work for is not known, except in one or two instances, even to the Senators themselves. The situation as to the democratic presidential nomination is very much more mixed than it was at Minneapolis, and, as the greatest statesmen are those who make the fewest mistakes, none of these Sena- tors care to indulge in any ante-convention re- marks. Of course the general sentiment is to the effect that the fight will largely be between Cleveland and Hill, but there are those who have already selected compromise candidates. Among the Senators who will Iny aside their senatorial duties for awhile are Messrs. Gor- man, Pasco, Faulkner, Daniel, Blodgett, Mc- Pherson, Vilas, Gibson of Maryland, Mille’ But- ler, Ransom, Brice and, probably,’ Blackburn. | Of’ these Senators Gorman, Pasco, MePherson and Vilas are delegates. INTENSE HEAT IN NEW YORK. It Was Even Warmer Than Monday—In Other Cities. Although there was only a ten-mile breeze blowing in New York yesterday against that of fourteen miles on Monday, the weather did not seem so completely insufferable during the early morning hours. But along towards noon old Sol, aided by General Humidity, who mustered his forces to the extent of 82 per cent yesterday instead of 75 as on Monday, began the work of making life a buzden, especially for | people of adipoise tendencies. Perry's thermometer registered as bigh as 981¢ yesterday and Hudnut’s, in the shadow of St. Paul's Church, Broadway, scored 97. At 10 o'clock in the morning both these in- struments denoted 82 degrees and at 10:30 8: Daring the same period Monday they jumpe wo . At noon Perry’s thermometer showed 86 de- frees and the tendency of the mercury was still upward. The hottest part of the country was the region including northern New York and New Pas This region usually reaches the limit in regard to heat as well as cold. A — feature of the weather lay in the fact that at $ o'clock in the morning the tem- Perainre was $ degrees cooler in the shrde and 4 degrees warmer in the sun than it was Mon- day at the same hour. The heat of the sun was intense. It was im ible to receive the full force of ite rays without feeling the effect at once, 2+ IT COST FOUR LIVES. Collision of Passenger Trains in Bishopsgate Station, London. A collision at Bishopsgate, London, yesterday morning resulted in the loss of four lives and | the injury of many persons. Two trains, run | for the purpose of carving people who live in the suburbs to their work in London and known as workingmen’s trains, collided near the Bishopsgate station. ‘The trains were crowded with people, and as they crashed into each other | there was a frightful outcry, indicating that a large number had been killed or maimed. It was fond that besides the four killed forty were injured in the collison and it is thought some of the latter may not survive. Great ex- citement prevailed at Bishopsgate, as other trains come in bearing thousands of passengers, ail of whom were delayed until the wreck had been cleared. The police set to work at once to ascertain the responsibility of the disaster. ——____+e+ Exports of Mineral Oils, The chief of the bureau of statistics reports that the total values of the exports of domestic mineral oils from the United States during the month of May, 1892, and during the eleven | months ended May 31, 1892, as compared with similar exports during the corresponding pe- riods of the preceding year, were as follows: May, 1892, $3,171,926: May, 1891, $3,585,276; eleven months ended May 31, 1592, $40,718,240; eleven months ended May 31, 1892, $47,273,930. ~ Exports of Provisions. ‘The chief of the burean of statistics reports that the total values of the exports of beef and | hog products from the United States during the month of May, 1892; and during the seven months ended May 31, as compared with | lar exports during the corresponding of | the ing year, were as follor ry, 1892, $10,501,592; May, 1891, $7,068,006; five months ended May 31, 1892, $74,289,191; five wonths ended May $1, 1891, $71,952,901, pnabadian ses wre Investigating the Oil City Fire. The coroner's jury has met to inquire into the cause and location of the fire at Oil City, Pa. It was proved that the fire first caught between Seneca street bridge and the railroad bridge from the ignition of gas rising from benzine flowing from the Keystone tank. Previous to this the only deaths were those of the Terwigers brothers, who had been drowned while rescu- | ing others. The hospital patients are all re- ported as improving. Those still in a serious ecndition are L. Hassenfritz and the two Brun. sel children. It is feared that Mr, Hassenfritz, even if he recovers, will be blind.
