HE TELLS THE PRESIDENT WHAT WORE ME DID IX THE RECENT CONVENTION-—DELEGATES AND OTHERS WHO SAW GEN. HARRISON TODAY—THE CABINET MEETIXG. The “original Harrison man” is seen in great profusion around the White House these days. He is always a delegate to the late convention returning home and just dropping into the White House “to say howdy to the President.” Of course he voted for Mr. Harrison from the first, and, as a matter of fact, never bad an in- tention of voting for any one else, but would have gone down with his colors nailed to the mast, egad, sir! It is enfe to say that the majority of the Har- rison delegates living east of the Alleghanies will find time to stop a day or two in Washing- ton on their way home, and the first place they make for after getting a shave and a clean col- lar is the White House, Private Secretary Hal- ford receives them with suavity and urbanity— characteristic, of course—and when opportuntty affords rings them in on the President, and their joy is complete, “They all have the same story to tell. “It wasa hard fight, Mr. President, but we got there—ves,we did.” As T said to my friends before the balloting commenced, ‘It's going to be a fight, but you stand by me'—and they aid.” Then he draws himself up with pride and beams upon the President, who says that was very kind of him to be sure, and he will ciate it, &c. Whereupon the delegate, the orig- inal Harrison man, goes away feeling that he has made himself solid beyond a perad venture. CALVIN CHASE MAKES 4 CALL, Calvin Chase of this city, who went to the convention and was ruled out by the com- mittee on credentials, but who feels that his cause won at any rate if he didn't, called at the White House today to pay his respects. to the President. Mr. Chase may not have cast a vote for Mr. Harrison—that was not his fault, hi gret_but it ie uot gainsaid that he “pulled” for him, and the lay brother on the outside is sometimes influential. THE ATTORNEY GENERAL'S Sox. Mr. 8. D. Miller, son of the Attorney General, also dropped in for a moment. He didn’t say much—he is very modest—but his fame had preceded him. He was a free lance at the con- vention and it is said waxa good match for young Dick Quay of the opposition, who, under the tutelage of his father, is reported to have | developed good fighting qualities. | _ Senator Felton of California called with Gen, ‘M. M. Estee. Senator Felton, although a dele- | gate from a pronounced Blaine state, happil; | got im out of the rain by voting with the Han son men. He is not worrying about the future now to any considerable extent, it is said, The politicians who called ‘during the day gossiped about -the vacancy in the cabinet and the Supreme bench. The report that Gen. Massey of Delaware is to be made a Supreme Court — was canvassed. Gen. wane was a Harrison delegate at Minneapolis, and, | moreover, was a member of the commitiee on | credentials, whore it is said he made his pres | ence felt. Nothing definite as to Gen. Massey's appointment can be learned, but it is thought he is not an impossibility. TODAY'S CABINET MEETING, The regular Tuesday cabinet meeting today is said to have been something of # jollificetion meeting. This is the first formal cabinet meet- ing since the good news arrived from Minne- olis, and all hands were in « bumor. The result of the convention and. the prospect for November formed live topics of conver- sation. Just at this time the political gossips, the men who are never happy unless they are talk- ing of war and rumors of war, and who like to make and unmake cabinets, are disc the probabilities of the personnel of Mr. | rison’s next cabinet in case he is elected. According to the ttle of — the gossipers there will changes in the cabinet. They say that Gen. Noble would | like to retire to private life, and that if he does so Land Commissioner Carter will take up his | portfolio. They alto ray that Postmaster Ge eral Wanamaker would like to devote more at- tention to his personal business and would not jbe averse to turning over bis desk to another. Not content with this they go further and intimate that Attorney General Miller may be promoted to theSupreme bench, all of which.of course, is listened to and repeated by those who hear if. It te expected there will be un influx of delegates next Monday when the notification commitice arrives, eet TWO BRIEF SESSIONS. ITS HISTORY. ‘The Present Meeting of the Elks the Largest Gathering of the Order. Borrato, N. ¥., June 14 —A conservative ea timate of the number of Elks and their guests in attendance at the Grand Lodge and snnual reunion here places it at 6,000. It is conceded on all sides to be the largest gathering in the history of the order. and the visitors are enjoy ing themselves to the extent of their oppor tunities. At 9 o'clock the Grand Lodge session opened at the Academy of Music, Grand Exalted Kuler Hay of Washington ng. Welcome wide dresses were delivered by Mayor Bishop, Con gressman Lockwood and ex-Asecmblymen Andreas. At the close of the weleoming exer cises the Grand Lodge went into secret sessiom on the of the committee on credentials. When that businew had been finished an wd- journment was taken until tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock. Gossip about the hotel corridors this morn ing indicates that a feeling exists for a material change in the present administration. Wath one or two exceptions new officers are con- templated. Louisville wants several gfficers and several reforms. Among the reforms tw be discussed is that the lodge and per capita tax to the Grand Lodge should be reduced, as ihe | fund is considerably larger than there’ is any need for. The “progressioniste” oppose this. They want the proseat tax retained and tho | surplus regarded asa fund for the building of 4 permanent Elks’ home. The latter sentiment is regarded in the most favorable light. ‘The fight for the next Grand Lodge meeting place will be hot. The decision is likely to Test between Chicago and Detroit. The former is favored because of the world’s fair, whiée it is argued, on the other land, that in view of the crowded condition of Chicago next year De- troit will be likely to provide better accomoda- tions, The canvass for the chief office con- tinues ective aud Apperly of Louisville is said to have a good lead. Among the candidates for grand secretary are James V. Cook of Indianapolis, Mr. Chaun~ cey of Grand Rapids, Mr. White of Chicago and Mr. Wolf of Albany. ‘There is no likelihood of any competition for the position of grand chap- lain. Mr. Henry G. Perry of Chicago, 1 present incumbent, is favorably spoken of for Te-election. —_> —- DISTRICT GOVERNMENT.
