4 THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15, 1892—TEN PAGES, THE_ EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. WEDNESDAY. ... dane 15, 1892. CROSBY 8. NovES THE EVENING STAR bas a regular and permanent circulation in Washingto@three times larger than that of any ether paper in theeity. As a lecal NEWS paper and Ad~ vertising Medinm it has no competitor. The Chice go convention, following that which has just adjourned at Minneapolis, will settle for the democrats the policy they wish or are able to pursue. Doubtiess that policy will be very much the reverse of that adopted at the republican convention. A third party in the ‘west and south is a thing certain. The effect of such division on national polities cannot be foretold until the nominees and principles of the Chicago convention are announced. Al- thongh the third party is now in some form a| thing certaix, its proportions and precise com- plexion are things very uncertain. Should Mr. Cleveland, 2 secs probable. be the democratic leader, the third party will assume in some states and districts a more formidable shape than might othervise be the case. The ex- President represents the very antithesis of what is desired by the farmers’ movement. His sil- ver views are almost personally resented by the participants im that movement. Whether he will be able to enrb the third party tendency in the democratic states of the south, and make some gains in the agricultural tates of the re- | publican west, where there ins been some di tatisfaction on account of the tariff or other issnes; whether, also, he can reconcile the Hill | people in New York, are matters for managerial solicitude in all the wigwams and may well per- plex the sachems from Tammany to Texas, and from Machias to Los Angeles. The democrats | will break the political record if they nominate Mr. Cleveland. They will break it into a thou- sand pieces if they succeed in electing him. With the example of another New York man, Mr. Van Buen, before them they may hesitate, and hesitating take an untried man. The nomination of Cleveland would simply be to approve what hix admirers claim. that he isan excepiion to all rules. He certainly has an ex- ceptional hold upon the affections of a majority et the democratic part; + The death of President Polk of the Farmer's Allianee excites intense interest in the third party and elsewhere as to the probable course 4f the new organization at its convention in Omaha next month. The name of Mr. Pelk | bad been so prominently connected with the | gossip as to the “people's party” presidential ticket that his removal at this juncture starts | rumors as to his succession in Iradership. Two names mentioned are those of Senator Stewart | of Nevada and Representative Watson of | Georgia, but not for the same place. Mr. Stewart ix, as everybody knows, the apostle of silver in the Senate, while Mr. Watson is leader | of the third party in the House. According to the report, the Senator is intended for the head | nd the Representative for the tail of the ticket. _ If the ticket here namsd thall be nominated by the convention it will have silver enough at top and farmer enough at bottom to suit the ‘most exacting demands. Both men are lawyers, | it is trae, iit Mr. Watson is also a tiller of the soil, at least so far as the Congressional Direc- tory is concerned. ———_—++e____ Washington's position with reference to the | polities of the country is peculiar. It pre-| serves its equilibrium in spite of the excite-| ment attending a campaign, and this is largely due to the fact that itp attitude is one of con- | templation rather than direct interest in the issue. It is one of the few places where the ituation is conducive to an unbiassed view of eurrent events. It furnishes an excellent field | fora newspaper to display enterprise without | feeling, and be © complete mirror of great | events that affect the country. During the | ‘Minneapolis convention Tae Star presented a complete snd undistorted reflex of political | conditions and events. It will do the sams dur- ing the Chicago convention and at the conven- tions that occur after that. The erop outlook in the western wheat- growing states is favorable. The reports re- ceived by the New York Sun from Minnesota and the Dakotas are uniformly favorable, but the season is two weeks later than the average, owing to rain, snow and freezing weather that prevailed there up almost to the end of May. ‘The recent warm season has brought out the crops, and besides the farmers have catght up with their ploughing by working extra time. ‘The corn prospects in Lllinois and Indiana are now cheering after a backward season. The | Joss in acreage is on flat lands and will be made | up by gains in the rolling country.
