Between six and ight thousand people visited the 200 yesterday, the attendance being the largest this year. Despite the fact that the authorities havo had but little more funds than were absolutely necessary to maintain the ani- mals, many improvements have becn made, both for the comfort and protection of the ani- mals and of the public. Bridges have been built, roads graded and a board walk Iaid from ‘the Quarry road entrance through the grounds to the buffalo house, Several fine new cages have been constructed in the animal house, those occupied by the lion, sacred bull and deer being particularly noteworthy. ‘The zoo has recently been resented with two South American boaconstrictors and an anaconda, They are young specimens and are in remarkably fine condition. They are fed on live rats, rabbits and chickens. One of the boa- constrictors enjoyed a repast of live rats yos- terday morning, aud spent the rest of the day in dozing. A number of South American mor- keys and birds have also been lately received. A few days ago a little baby buffalo came to gindden the heart of Superintendent Biack- burn. The little feliow is about as large as a| young calf, and, with his proud mother. occu- pies one of the buffalo yards on the hill. He ‘escaped from the yard a day or so ago and led the keepers a merry chaso over the grounds before he was captured and taken back to his frantic mamma. Another interesting young- ster in the zoo is the little peceary or wild hog, born there very recently.
