Tickets for these recitals may be secured ‘at Droop’s and Knabe’s. ——_ ALEXANDRIA. ‘TEE CHANGES OF TIME, TIDE AND FIRE. ‘The large old Vass building on Washington st, which haslately been Patterson's stable and which was destroyed by fire yesterday, was one of the land marks of that section, and is prob- ably, with the exception of Christ Church, the oldest builting in that vicinity. When it was burned it stood on a hill which de- seended from St. Asaph street towards ravine between St. Asaph and Pitt streets, where a tan yard was established, and while Abrabam Vass conducted at the long Washing- ton street house a “general ware house for foreign and domestic goods,” his back extended to the Wise's leather mak- establishment and tan yard east of St. Asaph street. Later the Free Masons of | Brooke Lodge, organized in 17%, built their | hall on the St. Asaph street side of the Jot, and | for the third of « century held masonic meet- ings there. Its ceiling of “blue sky with fleecy clouds, through which golden stars peeped,” was Considered a triumph of Alexandria painters’ art. ‘The ancestors of the Towers, Galt, May, Rieb- ards, Bladen, Dove and other Washington fam- ilies were among the officers of this lodge. which gave up its charter about 1830.
