For seventy years the population of Alexandria flowed to Washington in an unre- mitting stream. People would come from the country, or from abroad, and after remaining awhile in Alexandria remove to its growing neighbor, so that in many cases the signboards originally put on King and on Fairfax streets were afterward dis- plityed on Pennsylvania avenue. ‘The house on Fairfax street now being remodeled for the Mount Vernon street railway gives an illustration of this movement. Several of its occupants had moved to Wash- ington before 1830. It was then occupied by Silas Reed & Bros., cigar manufacturers, who moved to Washington. Afterward Mathias Snyder, broker, lived thereand moved to Wash- ington; David’ Givins, who followed him, moved to Washington; Wm. Morgan, who kept 8 shoe store there in the “forties,” moved to Washington and has long been an efficient offi- cer at the District building: Isaac Kell lived there and a portion of his family moved to Washington, his son Leing conuected for some time with the Ebbitt House drug store; James H. Simpson, who kept a bakery there, moved to Washington and was long an officer of the metropolitan police. Of course tho occu- pants of tho house during the war went to Washington, for nine-tenths of the transient dwellers here during the eceupation removed to Washington al close of the war. Since then Air. James Crump and other occupants have tried Washington at @ place of business. ‘The history of th house is the history of ‘scores of other houses, and it is estimated that Alexandria has sent population to Washington to the extent of twice the number of inhabit- ants nowhere. Of late.years there has been some change in the tide and the movement of people doing business in Washington and seck- ing homes in Alexandria has been constant—at first small, but of late largely increasing, and some Washingtonians have come here to do business. Alexandria is tow building rows of houses to accommodate this influx. THE GOVERNING BODIES OF THE CITY. The Alexandria board of trade has proven » valuable aid to the progress of Alexandria. It has a character of permanence and is unfettered in its work for the public interest, serving in this respect @ sort of supreme city council with isory powers. The city couneil represents the dominant _politi- cal sentiment and its m bers: selected at the democratic primaries, the boards are subject to a constant change of membership, which isfatal to the acquirement of thorough knowledge of city affairs, and un- kely to secure a uniform municipal policy. ‘The board of trade will meet next Monday night at its rooms in Paff's Hall and elect its officers for the year. ‘The enterprising and hard-working president, Mr. F. A- Reed, will submit a report of the work of the board, and the meeting will be a very interesting oue. FUNERAL OF J, EDWARD SHUMAN. The Young Men's Catholic Sodality Lyceum attended this morning the funeral of the late J. Edward Shuman from his home at the cor- ner of King and Pitt streets. The funeral line moved to St. Mary's Chureb, where a requiem mass was celebrated by Kev. Father Cutle: ‘Lhe interment was made at the Catholic cem: tery on Washington and Church streets. A NEW ALEXANDRIA Recently number of capitalists from Phila- delphia and New York purchased a large tract of land bordering the Potomac river and ex- tending south from Alexandria. Associated with these gentlemen are a number of weil- known business men of Alexandria and ington. ‘This land lies just south of Hunting creek and comprises some 1,600 acres. ‘They Propose to establish there a mew Alexandria, i uttheir plans for accomplishing this show quite as much originality and enterprise as that of the purchase of this body of land. When their plans are carried out a town will spring up there—a new municipality. ‘This town is not to be built on paper, but is to be the direct outgrowt: of the establishment of manu.ac- tories, This is the idea that the founders had in view when they made their investment in the land. They saw the natural advantages of- fered by this location, as it is at the extreme inland point in the river for deep: water navigation and is within easy reach of eval and timber. ‘The great stores of raw ma- terial can be brought tothe wharves of this new town cheaply and rapidly. and the manu- igctured products can with equal ease and cheapness be placed in such chief markets as New York, Philadel Baitimore and points south, ‘Ihis enterprise is under the control of the Land and River Improvement Compan; They have in starting organized the Washin; tou, Alexandria and Mount Vernon Electric Railway Company and propose to build an electric road from Alexandria through their property to Mount Vernon. ‘they have made negotiations with several large business con- cerns to establish their plants there. On the beautiful blutfs overlooking the river will be the sites for residences. It is proposed, how- ever, to supply a substantial basis for popula- tion in the manufactures aud the building #i will then be in demand. ‘they have, 1t is said, the money to spend in carrying out their plans. ‘The capital of the improvement company ulone is $1,000,000.
