The unmasking at midnight proved a great revelation as the identity of the maskers be- came known, and is still remombered with pleasure by many persons who are still beaux and belles. There have beon ous Mi-careme balls, and really one est was that given last year by Ganson White in honor of the dancing class. Mrs. Hearst gave an elegant ball « few yeurs ago that made the of that Lent a memorable date. Another famous Mi-careme ball that will go down into history as a might-have-been was the poudre arranged by Mrs. Whitney for a char- Itable purpose and was omitted because of » death in her family. c ‘The White House has been phenomenally quiet ull the week. The chief causes for it have been Mrs. Harrison's illness and Mrs. Me- Kee's departure for Boston. Mrs. Harrison had an attack of bronchitis, that, however, quickly yielded to treatment by Monday, but’ she has had to be very careful since, and was obliged to give up many social engagements that she had accepted weeks ago. Fortunately she bad no dinner party planned forathome. The fine days of the week tempted the President to re- turn to his daily walks and drives. He has been a frequent promenader on Connecticut avenue and generally alone, during the early afternoons, when society is airing itself in ite showy turnouts. Yesterday he varied his exer- cise by driving out to the country behind his pair and having Mrs. Dimmick in the buggy with him. z Mrs. McKee started on Tuesday for Boston, and expected to be away about ten days. We are going to havea studio concert. It has been agsravating, to say the least, to hear people, wheu they returned from New York and Boston Visits this past season, reler so fre- quently to the charm of these ‘events so com- mon in the largecities. Mr. Pierre Stevens has planned a coucert at Mr. Harvey L. 0 studio, 1727 1%h street, on Monday evening, April 4, in which the very best musical talent a te ony ull tke part, Me. Siovens bas given so many other delightful evenings at the various dramatic entertainment t whieh he has been so prominent that all his friends are only too glad to help him make this concert a great success. ‘The proceeds are to be applied to the erection of a churek im the county. Mrs. Hibbard Thompson, Mrs. Charles G. Dulin, Mrs. and Miss Painter, Mrs. Ward and Mrs. Comstock are the committee of ladies in- terested in the musical and literary entertain- ment at All Souls’ Church next Tuesday even- ing. Mins E. Jean Wilson, assisted by the Co- lumbia Musical Club and’ several professional artists, will take part. ‘The proceeds are to aid the mission school of cookery and housework, in which so many prominent persons are inter- ested. Mrs. Wm. E. Earle gave a musicale yesterday morning, when a delighted company of 100 friends were her guests. Mra Vance, whose clever interpretation of southern dialect poems is well known among her friends, recited “The Two Runaways” and was greatly ap- Jauded. Mrs. Stilson Hutchins sang and Miss Btevens played during the musical part of the rogram. Refreshments were served before the dies separated after spending a couple of hours in this charming way. ‘The marriage of Miss Brewer and Mr. Kar- rick will take place on Easter Monday night and at St. John’s Church, which the bride-elect has attended since coming here to reside. Mr. Rarrick will be here tomorrow for a little visit. ‘The bride's two young sisters. who are still school girls, will be her bridesmaids. They will be home from echool for the Easter holidays and to assist at this happy function. As Jus- tice Brewer's house would not begin to accom- modate all the acquaintances of the family the company invited to the reception wili consist only of the contracting families and the mem- | bers of the Supreme Court families. A delegation of Mr. Karrick’s friends will come on from Boston for the wedding. The wedding trip wiil be to Europe and their future homes ton, Mrs. Wanamaker went to New York yester- day morning and the Misses Wanamaker fol- lowed ber in the afternoon. They expect to be away about a fortnight, as Mrs. Wanamaker felt the need of a little rest and change of scene. Mrs. Elkins intends to keep up her Wednes- day receptions during Lent whenever she is in town, as it gives her as much pleasure to meet her friends as it invariably gives those who cross her threshold. The respite from many social obligations is giving Secretary and Mrs. Eikins more chance to be with their family. They are companions of their daughters and sons in more than the usual sense. The line of bicycles m front of the house gives evidence of the boys’ presence. There are three at home now, Stephen, Richard and Blaine, and they are fine, manly boys, up to all sorts of pranks, but not of a variety go give trouble to their mother. Master Davis Elkins is at college. Miss Elkins is devoted to her brothers and they to her, but all admit that little Miss Katherine is the pet of the household. Secretary Elkins knows that his tuble is elastic, as he rarely ever goes home to luncheon without bringing one or two friends along. Both Mrs. and Mi | Elkins express “the greatest pleasure in their Washington life, the m N more to their daily satisfaction. The family will probably go up to their West Virginia home some time in early May if the weather looks promising for country life. ‘Miss Foster, daughter of the Secretary of the Treasury, will give a luncheon on Monday honor of Mise Wight. ps 3 Mrs. Leiter has been entertaining and Lady Brassy during their stay here.
