2 5 < THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C., TUESDAY, MARCH 15, 1892-TWELVE PAGES. SWEATING GOLD COINS. jo More Cause for Alarm Than at Any ‘Other Time. ‘The report has reached this city from New ‘York to the effect that several large banks in that city which do basiness with California have been troubled of Inte at the many light- weight $20 gold pieces which are foand in ‘almost every shipment of gold that comes from that state. To such» point bas the trouble grown, it is said, that the opinion has beea Teached that the coins are subjected toa sweat- ing process by electricity, which will extract as much as 75 cents or $1 from each $20 gold piece without materially affecting tho face of ‘the coin. At the treasury a Stan reporter was told that the matter had not yet been officially called to ‘the attention of the department and that noth- ing more was known about it than has ap- peared in the newspapers It was said, how- ever, that there was no reason to suppose that the tronbie was any worse now than usual. Th practice of “sweating” gold coins goes on all the time toa greater or less extent. In Cali where gold current much mo: freely than it does ie the east, a ight-weight coin is not noticed so ily. The opimon atthe treasury that the matter has at- tracted attention just now simply because « lot of gold has come ‘east and has been subjected toscloser examination than it has ever had before since it left the mint. ——— AMUSEMENTS. Avaavon’s—Miss Huntington, upon the ad- vie of her physician, has decided not to sing tonight, in order that there may be no inter- ruption for the balance of the week. By rest- ing tonight sue will be able to regain her strength and voice and appear positively to- morrow night aud the balance of the week. She is umproving finely and it is thought will then be sbie to present “Paul Jones” in mag- wificent style. “A Texas Stezn,” the most conspicuous stc- cess of Mr. Charles Hoyt, appeared last night ‘at the New National Theater to open its second engagement in Washington. Mr. Hoythasgradu- ally beon working away from the soug-and-dance of theatrical production, and it is grati- so note that the further he gets from this e the greater his popularity becomes = last night was crowded to the stand- ing room limit, and long before the curtain went up it became evident that “A Texas Steer” was to repeat its former phenome- mal success. There has been no material ehange in the cast. Mr. Tim Murphy pre- sents the character of Maverick Brander with the deligntful genial drollery that made it so popular before. He is @ Washington man and it was shown last night that Washington is properly proud uf him. He aa an actor as well as a comedian and shows the true artistic wpirit by making the character Ware presented in his role a matter of care- attention. Last night he received an ova- tion. He was presented with a beatiful floral ‘wibute and enthusiastically received at ull Simes. Miss Flora Walsh was, as she always bas been. s popular figure in the cast. Acapemy oF Music.—Last night at the Acad- emy of Music Mr. John L. Stoddard continued his talk upon Mexico and gave an amount of information in regard to that interesting re- public which is so close to the United Statei that was greatly appreciated by the large audi ence that filled every seat. Besides the graphic descriptions of the scenery and buildings, the bits of history of the ancient Aztec race, ‘who possessed a curious combination of ad- vanced civilization and bratal barbarism besides, the keen observations on the customs and babits of the people and philosophic retlee- dons on their future, the leciurer introduces anecdotes which show a deep sense of humor ‘and are told in such @ manner as to be highly attractive to bis listeners. His talk last might was upon the City of Mexico, the capital of the republic, and he of course referred to the re- markable career of President Diaz. His shrewd statesmansbip and diplomacy were pointed out, how he had turned enemies into friends and how he was gradually working out the salvation of Mexico. The curious cab s¥#- tem was described, as were the churches and the ecclesiastical revolution by which religious perty was largely confiscated by the state. Fid'tact wes mentioned that the houses of Metico have uo chimneys. the temperature not requiring fire tor heat, and cooking being done im ovens with charcoal as fuel. Funeral train cars ware shown. the cheaper ones drawn by mules and rushed through the city ate rapid Tate, and commenting upon this the lecturer said that owing so the indolent habits of the in- habitants the oxly time when they may be said to bein a hurry is when they are going to their graves. ‘The museum of Mexico, with its nu- Merous relics of the Aztecs, including the sacrifical stone, the Castle of Chapultepec and & view of the surrounding country were shown and grephicaliy described, as was the steep desceut of the Tampico railroad which leads from the mountain region to the coast. The same lecture will be repeated tonight in course Band tomorrow night in the third course. Tux Piaso Kecrrat of Mr. Chas. 8. Elliott for the benefit of the organ fund of the Western Presbyterian Church will take place on Tues- day evening, the 22d, and not tonight, as bas been erroneously anuounced. Tae Bosrox Syxruoxy Oncuzstaa.—More interest seems tobe manifested in the next concert of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, ich will take piace tomorrow night at the Congregational Church, than at any of the Previous concerts this season. The advance sale bas been very large and but a very few seats now rewain unsold. ‘The program is an exceedingly attractive one, both for the ercbestraand also for Eugene D'Albert, the eminent pianist, who will be the soloist. Tae Howaxp Buaiesque Compaxy.—Kernan’s Was packed to the doors last might by a curious audience, wbo had assembled principally to Jook upon Eva Kay Hamilton, the erstwhile vensational star of Atlantic City. She did not make ber appearance until the lastact and then only sai the curiusity of those present, for ‘the small part she bad was handled in an ama- teurish manner, and her every action was ag Ungraceful a» one would wish to see. The @restest attraction was her jewels. She has a small fortune in these. ‘The performance Otherwise was good. There area number of Pretty girls and the costuming is new and ex- Pensive. Zamora, the wizard of the air, gave « startling exhibition in midair. His drop from the ceiling on the perpendicular swinging pole was blood curdiing. A number of natural pictares depicting popular songs were inter- spersed throughout tue performance. Again tonight. Hasaw = Buov Tueate: ‘The World Against Her” proved @ good drawing card at ‘te Hijou last night, and when the curtain rose the largest audience of the season was present. ‘The play is w skillful piece of work, and the author bas deitly drawn his characters from real life and given them s disiogue that is both bright and crisp. As for action there is plenty f it, calculated to suit all tastes. There is one thing in ite favor, it lacks inconsistencies, and none of the situations are overdrawn. An in- teresting plot. easily followed, and introducing some really good comedy, keeps the audience highly interested. ‘The company is a good one, wud the scenery first-class. Again tonight. ataietecen ALEXANDRIA. : THE CASE OF JEFFERSON PHILLIPS. Jefferson Phillips is sentenced to be hung on the 25th of March, the Friday of next week, Wat it is well understood that the application to the court of appeals now to be made will bave the effect of securing a stpersedeas of ‘the sentence until afier the case shall have bad ® hearing w the appellate court. The bill vf exceptions on which the appeal is founded is now Just completed, and, having been signed ‘by Judge Norton, will be ‘sent to Richmond, sud it is probable that a supersedeas will reach here early next week and the execution be post- Philips is is good health and time after the manner of the other prison- ers in jail, but is uuder more constant sur- veilance of the Jail guards, couPoxatio counr. ‘The corporation court—Judge Norton—has began ite March term at the market court house. In the case of Armstrong, administra- ‘tor, agt. Baker. the report of the commissioner has been confirmed. On the probate mde of ‘the court Lewis dick. Bell was appointed ad- ministrator of Moses Russell. John M. John- on was substituted for Mr. 8. T. Beach as ad- ministrator of the estate of Wm. N. McVeigh. the estate of A Henderson. The estate of Julins He@ry was committed for administra tion to the city sergeant, aud the will of Mrs. A. M. Evans was probated. : xores. The funeral of Mrs. Esther B.
