4 EVENING STAR. . THE FoorsS WASHINGTON: SATURDAY. February 20, 189%. CROSBY 8. NOYES... << THE EVENING STAR has a regular and permanent circulation in Washington three mes larger than that of any other paper im the city. As a local NEWS paper and Advertising Medium it has no competitor. eS ‘The Rock Creek Park property owners, whose land it is proposed to condemn, made a strong fight before the proper tribunals to obtain for their land the highest possible price. They secured what the rest of the community Believe fo be fair and even liberal compensation for their property. A few are still dissatisfied, and have appealed to the Supreme Court of the United States. So far, so good. Every American citizen has the right to secure the best pussible bargain for himself im disposing of what belongs to him, and if he feels aggrieved the courts are established for the very purpose of giving him legal redress. Bat the few property owners who want and fosist upon more moncy for their land are not satisfied to appeal to the Supreme Court. They have flied an appeal to the House committee en appropriations, and have been heard upon it They want the government to pay them move money for their land,—or else they want the park project smashed on the ground ‘that the government is committed to pay to too much money for the land, or that the law is Assur Srarzusst OF THE Cosszoncor Morvaz Las Issvrance Couraxr For Interestand Rents 3,218,354.27 Profit and Loss... 81,310.18 —— $7,804,479.00 065,003,573.04 DISBURSED IN 1891. If any proposition for @ nw appro- priation for the park were made the com- mittee would undoubtedly take # vigorous Bold upon the whole matter. But no such appropriation has been asked. If specific charges of misuse of the park appro- Priation were made, the committee might well investigate. But no such charges have been presented. The integrity of the commission is unimpeached and unim- peachable. Investigution would serve only to develop facts to their credit. The’ park project in general will now come in the natural order of events before the President, ‘while the appeals of certain property owners on certain points will go to the Supreme Court of the United States. —+ > ____ ‘The Baltimore and Ohio railroad has an- 6,885, 778.16 Balance Not Assets, Dec.31,1891.. $58,207,704.88 SCHEDULE:OF ASSETS. ‘Loans upon Real Estate, first lien.... $36,417.372.87 ‘Loans upon Stocks and Bonds. 39,782.50 Premium Notes on Policies in force.. _1,569,873.30 Cost of Real Estate owned bythe Company. 7.185,284.70 Costof United States andother Bonds 11,420,808.39 Cost of Bank and Raiiroad Stocks... 408,085.25 1,156.563.85, 1,645.00, 8,289.02 nounced its intention of building a station in 2944,190.26 this city to cost several hundred thousand 7,110.65, dollars. The plans have been drawn, and it is Fromised that the building will be architecturally imposing and thoroughly creditable, both to 425,487.70 the railroad and to the city. The Baltimore and Potomac railroad has informally intimated 153,896.46 $1,530,685.07 £859, 738,479.95 that feature of its scheme of terminal im- Provement is the erection of @ sta- tion here that will be the finest on the whole Pennsylvania system. Station buildings need so much ground space, and, comparatively speaking, so little air space, that in many instances they fail tobe architecturally imposing because their height is dispropor- tionate to their other dimensions. When the tracks are elevated,as in a number of the Euro- pean cities, additional height in stations is nec- essary for the purposes of the railroads. In London some of the leading roads utilize the space in their lofty and impressive head- houses for hotel purposes. These sta- tions are among the most striking buiid- ings in London. To Americans a railroad Botel means a third-rate concern where the badls-cooked meals are scrambled for by travelers, where sleep is enlivened by railroad whistlings, ringings and the blowing off of Steam, and where no one would abide unless @ompelied to. The London railroad hotels are im buildings which rank architecturally among the finest in the city, the rates are high and the service first-class. The problem is to Utilize the space in a station which is built to the proper height to cause it to adorn instead of disfiguring the city. Our local roads might adopt the London snggestion and build hotels in connection with their stations. One or the other of them ought to seize the opportunity. of utilizing part of the station space by con- structing therein the great convention hail which Washington so much needs Ample room for most magnificent hall would be available above the station site of either road. If in connection with the hall the railroad hotel ‘after the London fashion were also constructed the venture would seem to promise to be ex- ceedingly profitable. The thousands of persons attending conventions, national or interuy.. tional, who swarm to the capital every year would be largely augmented by the erection of the hall, and what more natural than thet they should patronize the railroad which will carry them to the very building of their meeting place and supply them with first-class hotel accommodations in the same strueture? +2 —____ Albany is not to have a monopoly of the Political 22d of February business, and the democratic is not the ouly party which pro- Poses to utilize « patriotic day.
