On the 1st day of March the Chesapeake and Ohio canal dredges will begin the work of get- ting the old waterway in order by the 15th, on which date it will be formall; Whe: the last season closed ninety boats were en- gaged in plying between Cumberland and Georgetown. On the 15th of next month, when the regular scason of '92 opens, 150 will be placed on the canal and moro will follow as rapidly as they ean be built. Meredith, Win- shlp & Co. are now busily engaged in con- structing boats, and others interested are emu- lating their example with enthusiasm. All along the 184 miles wherever there is a suitable building place the work is going on. Old boat- men say that the canal was in better condition last year than it has been for twenty years, the free'use of the dredges enabling them to bring down larger cargoes, Since the winter season set in the management has caused to be built near Williamsport three new locks, and wher- ever it was necessary stronger timbers were laced. This gaye employment to many in the [ocalities who olherwise ‘would have spent the winter in forced ifleness. QUITE A BLAZE. In the southwestern portion of the town there was a considerable blaze about 11 o'clock last night. The two-story frame situate im- mediately in the rear of the Free bridge office caught fire, it is thought, from the kitchen stove, and in a short time was entirely gutted. The building was occupied by Geo. Schaffer and Frank Byrod. The former kept « confec- tionery store on the lower floor, while the lat- ter lived with his family above. When the flames wero discovered it was too late for the residents to attempt to come down stairs bi the regular way, aud they wero forced to reac the ground in the rear of the burning building by ineans of bed clothes and back sheds. No one was injured. No. Sengine and her men worked hard, but the loss reached nearly €500 before the flames were subdued. The stock Was entirely destroyed. The building, which Was insured, is owned by a Mrs. Thecker of 3249 M street. NorEs. The building of fires in Cooke Park by the boys of that neighborhood is causing loud complaints from the surrounding residents. Miss Agnes Green of Virginia, who has been the guost of Miss von Dachenhausen of P street, leaves today for her home.
