Abeilie and to have been in the habit of keeping that lady posted in regard to Dr. Deacon's move- ments. After his return to the hotel Mr. Deacon listened at the door of his wife's room and hearing a man's voice calied a hotel attendant and demanded admittance. Mra. Caxnes, Feb. 19.—Mr. Deacon, who surren- dered to’ the police immediately after the shooting, was today examined by the magis- trate in charge of the case. Mr. Deacon was calm and collected and gave a very succinet account of the incidents that led up to the kall- ing of Abeille. His story, though it does not agree in all its details with the published ae- counts of the affair, confirms in a measure the first telegraphed reports of the shouting. In response to the magistrate’s questions Mr. Deacon said he arrived at the Hotel Splen dide shortly after midnight yesterday. He entered the corridor and saw a lgbt shining through the space under the door of bis wifes room. ‘Though thet was nothing in iteelf to cause him to suspect that a man was in his wife's company, it did, for some unexplainable reason, reawaken his suspicion that bis wife was unfaithful to him. His suspicion regard- ing his wife's honor had been aroused some months prior by the conduct of his wife, but be had no tangible proof that she was engaged im wrong doing. When he saw the light under her door, how- ever, bis «uspicions became stronger and be determined to confirm his worst belief. He summoned the clerk of the hotel and in his company broke in the door of the room. He saw Abeille hiding belind an arm chair and fired three times at him. Mr. Deacon added that it was mot his intention to kill the man, but only to wound him. Mr. Deacon asked the magistrate to admit him to bail. The magistrate declined to doo at once, but promised to consider the applica- tion. In the meantime Mr. Deacon would have to remain in prison. Mrs. Deacon was then examined.
