The day for eating with your knife was out short by that happy invention—the four-pronged fork. INTEREST IN SENATORS. Popular interest in Senators increases in ® greater ratio than does the number of those more of less, distinguished legislators. The thousands of visitors who daily tramp through and around and about the Capitol delight in iG into the senatorial existence: they eceapy the Senate floor until removed by the opening of the session and the energy of sev- etal employes: they survey Senators from the galleries and criticise their respective and gen- erally respectable appearance; they peep through lialf-opened committee room doors and reach the apex of the tourist's bliss when they bebold a Senator engaged in the consump- tion of food. ‘THIS SENATOR LIKES PIE. “He's eatin’ raw oysters,” said a stranger to his wife the other day. ‘The couple had, from afar, followed one of the Senators who repre- sent their state to the Serate restaurant: the male tourist watched the alleged legilator com- mence feeding and then reported to the wait- but equaliy curious female. e Senate restaurant is an interesting place. Men sometimes succeed in concealing their ebaracters behind sezecns of reputation, but they cannot continually and successfully dis- guise their appetite. The man who loves to eat must fail to hide bis affection, just as he who cares but little for the good things of life must surely display his disdain for matters stomachic. If there is such a thing as @ lobbyist outside of the Senate he can be found im the restaurant somewhere between 12 oclock meridian and 4 pm: a clever argument has no such support as that which springs from a cleverly cooked and artistically served meal, and the average human tongue wags more freely in response to the gurgling caresses of free liquor than it would im direct return for hard cash—besides, many a man will unconsciously swallow such bait who would spurn the largest bribe ever offered out- side # New York board of aldermen. 4 HUNGRY cKOWD. Business does not really commence in the restaurant until noon, but for half an hour thereafter there is no rush. Then comes the ¢rowd of hungry ones, and from 12:30 until after 2 o'clock the waiters hardly have time to perspire. Evury table has its quota of occu- pants and the string of humanity that Jeans up ‘against the long counter is tolerably continu- ous It is a good place to find almost any lost one—whether Senate or Senator employe, tosay nothing of the liberal sprinkling of ‘news paper men who hurry in and out, combining the hasty pleasure of eating with the business of gathering information. To teed all these hungry ones Me. Page has to employ about thirty people — twelve of them in the kitchen—and they all have rea. sonable opportunitysto earn their recompense. ‘Three dusky retainers attend to the customers at the lunch counter, transmit orders of waiters to the kitchen and hand ont the tangible re- sponses. Of these James Lewis is chief. He is invariable designated “Lewis” and he prob- ably would not know that he was being spoken toif otherwise addressed. His business-like si- lence ia as marked as his business-like ability. FOR HIS STOMACH’S SAKE. But it wasnot the average luncher that a Stan feporter became interested in. He had both eyes on Senatocs and on the men who do their bidding in the private dining rooms—from Head Waiter Dick Shaw, portly, suave and solidly respectable, down ‘to the latest of Mr. Page's appointees. There is abroad in the land & vague impression to the effect that Senators subsist principally on terrapin and champagne. It may be necessary to state that this impres- sion is erroneous. Senators eat just about as do otber men whose circumstances are on about | ‘the same financial levei—they seem to have in them # great deal of human nature. SENATORS WHO LovE Piz. More democratic, broadly speaking, and more simple in his stomachic appetite than any ether Senator is Senator Coke of Texas. He is not a regular caller at the restaurant, but when he does put in an sppearance his invariable de- sire is for pie—piece of pic and a glass of water. He might enjoy these life sustainersin the com- | pond roped of the senatorial rooms, but pad emp stand right up against the counter there wash down large chunks of high- ra “ “<ssinment xiven to. me and 2 ing.
