EDMUND HUDSON'S LECTURE. He Talks Entertainingly of the German Em- perer and the German Army. The very large audience attending the lec- | ture of Mr. Edmund Hudsonat the Academy last evening musthave found in the lecture that which surpassed their expectation. “The German Emperor end the German Army” was the subject of the lecture. The emperor presented by Mr. Hudson was a very dificrent man from the not very pleasing ideal public journals have impreseed upon the mind. DESCRIBING THE GERMAN ARMY, The lecturer also pictared something differ- ent and greatly more impressive thaw one gets from the popular notion of the military system which demands its toll out of the firet vigor and manhood of the German youth. ‘The theme of the lecture is one of consider- able interest at first mention, but a greater and unexpected interest developes under the treatment of the lecturer. ‘The lecture was illustrated with some hun- dred and fitty or more pictures, which were fusLed against the screen, showing the empe- ror, the royal family, great statesmen and gen- erals and the army in all its phases of daily lite, from the marching battalions of the grand review to the homely scenes of.barrack life. ‘The emperor is shown in various uniforms and occupations, representing him in his do- estic, his military and his sportsman life. In ture the emperor stands among his y with a little child in his arms with its inst his cheek. In another picture he a solitary figure in military uniform, at | the entrance of his tent in a forest. Other | pictures represent him at the head of his troops | at various times, and in one he is in huntsmau's dress and in the act of dispatching a wild boar with a knife thrust. | The military scenes are striking and of ex- ceeding interest. One series of pictures shown in rapid succession, while the Marine Band played German martial music, showed the troops marching in reviows, and was remarkably realistic. The military funeral procession of Gen. Von Moltke was tepresented in the same | | ner, the troops being viewed from one point as they marched by, the series of pictures well representing the march. Various mili- tary movements were represented, and the scenes from barrack life were peculiarly realis- | tie and interesting. The lecture itself, | was of great interest. the young empcror as a man of lofty ambitions, high minded and high spirited, and in every iflerent from tke descriptions we get of | from ever; n youth on his reaching the | age of manhood, uot only gave Germany the greatest uemy on earth, but trained the young } men of the nation, in mind and muscle, in a manner to be of great use to them in other walks of life after their military service was at an end. ‘The lecture was received with marked appre- Durr ciation. several of the military scenes ad played German martial music, lecturer inivrmed the audience that © German emperor hstened to 300 military bands, but none of them as good as the Marine Bast. Among the audience were Mr. Von Mumm, German charge d’nftaires, and a large party of ladies, Secretary Elkins, Gen. Scuotield, “As- sistant Secieiry of War Grant, Senator Man- derson. Gen. H. V. Boynton, Assistant Secre- tary Seley of the navy, Commodore Felger, chief of ordnance, United States navy; Col. Heswood, commandant of the marine corps; Gen. C., February 13, 1892. Hon. James McMillan, Chairman of the ate Committe on the District of Columbia: Sir: The officers of the Washington Market Company have noticed the reference by the Senate to your committee of a resolution mak- ing sundry inquiries of the District Commis- sioners concerning the affairs of the company and they direct me to write you that they have no objection to the passage of the resoiution. They recognize, however, in the movement another of those acts of hostility to the com- pany which were frequent during the first years of itsexistence and which were all suc- ssfully met and showa to be without just foundation. ‘The subjects mentioned for the first time in the resolution are without importance, but all the others have been fully investigated at different times. ‘The attention of the committee is called to the following reports and papers: 1. No. 5, committee reports, house of dele- ates, tirst session of the legislative assembly of the District of Columbia, by the committee on laws and judiciary. 2. Senate report No. 449 of the first session of the Forty-third Congress, June 13, 1874, by committee on public buildings and grounds. 3. Senate report No. 661, second session Forty- third Congress, February 17, 1875, by the com- mittee on the judiciary. ‘There was ‘also an’ investigation during the session of 1870-1871, by the House committee on appropriations, but no written report was made. It is needless to notice any of tie fre- quently offered resolutions in the House of men and their names were given as Henry Herbert, James Bundy, Richard Phillips and Samuel Holmes. The prisoners reside in “Foggy Bottom,” where they were arrested Saturday afternoon. Last Wednesday night | two robberies were committed in the vicinity of 14th and 5 streets, the offices of Kt. H. Willet | and the contractor tor the power house being entered. From Mr. Willet’s office the burglars took a gold penbolder, 80 cents and some clothing, and in the other office they secured three revolvers and two pairs of shoes. Precinct Detectives Kaff and Weedon of the first precinet investigated the case, and, with the assistance of the officers of the third pre- cinet, they succeeded in arresting the persons mentioned. Two of the men were wearing the stolen shoes when arrested. One of them | made a confession and the officers found a por- tion of the property where he said he had put it. Nearly all the property has been recov- ered. ‘The prisoners were detained at the station today in order that they might be photo- graphed for the rogues’ gallery, and they will be taken to court tomorrow. ——— ‘The Good Templars.
