——— THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C., MONDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1892; THE PRESS CLUB DINNER. Members and Their Guests Enjoy Them- selves at the Cochran. RANPSOMELT DECORATED TARLES—A4 CHOICE MENU ADMIRABLY SERVED AND BRIGHT AND WITTY SPRECHES MAKE UP AN EVENING oF ‘HAPPINESS TO THOSE WHO WERE PRESEXT. ‘The National Capital Press Cab gave its first formal dinner Saturday night at the Hotel Cochran. It was huge and unqualified suc- cosa, and the annual dinner is very likely to be- come one of the poptlar institutions of the club. When tho first suggestion of such an event was made only « small and informal din- ner party was contemplated, but the list of members who wished to attend and bring guests with them grew so rapidly that the club's quarters were entirely inadequate to accommo- date them. ‘The tables, two long ones running the length of the room with a short one connecting them at the head, were set in the main dining room and decorated with silver, choice ent glass and beautiful floral decorations. At the head of the table sat Mr. S. H. Kauffmann, the presi- dent of the club, with his guest, Mr. H. B. F. Macfarland, president of the Gridiron Club, at his right and at his left Col. Fred D. Mussey, who acted as toastmaster and instigator gen- eral of the sports. His introductions were as ful es his remarks were witty, and during the course of the evening he called on most of the guests of the evening to tell under the rose gad in strict secrecy Just exactly, what they thought of the newspapers and of newspape ea Ts must have turprised some of the int- ter to find out how much they were esteemed by the lawmakers and other statesmen and what « very important position they occupied in the political, social and religious worlds. If all that was said were true it should be as easy ‘and pleasant to labor in the press galleries as to demolish « plate of diamond-back terrapin. ‘THE DECORATIONS AND MENU CARDS. ‘The decorations of the room and the tables were unusually elaborate and tasteful. Huge baskets and bunches of poppies, tulips, La France roses and narcissus formed the various floral pieces. The’ menu cards, designed by Mr. George Y. Coffin, had at the top an artistic sketch rep- resenting Richelieu, with a zoose-quill pen as a weapon, engaged in a duel with a consp armed with a sword, and above them the open ing clause of the quotation, “Beneath the ruie of men entirely great.” ‘In the upper lett- hand corner was a representation of the “idle correspondent,” in his shirt sleeves, burning the midnight gas, while in the lo hand corner was the “hard-workin with his feet cocked up on his desk of champagne in his hand. ‘The menu was as eboice as one could wish for. It was after 9 when the hundred or more members and guests of the club sat down and began their evening's work of dispatching specials to their home offices. It was many hours later when the pleasant task was finished. SOME WHO AROSE TO RESPOND.
