An Important Meeting of the Episcopal Building Committee. ASELECTION THAT WILL FILL EVERY REQUIRE- MENT DESIRED—LAND GIVEN BY TWO PROMI- < NENT GENTLEMEN-— No DOUBT OF BISHOP PARET'S APPROVAL OF THE COMMITTEE'S ACTION. As far as the committee appointed by Bishop Paret to select. a site for the proposed Episco- pal Cathedral is concerned this important duty was completed lust evening. ing of the committee wes held last evening at the residence of Rev. Dr. Douglass, the chair- man of the comuittee, and the entire eubject was carefully considered. At a previous meet- ing of the committee the various sites offered had been discussed, and in the interval the individual members had given the matter more or less attention. The advantages of the va- rious sites offered, it is believed, have been fully considered, and the concInsion reached is Delieved to be in the interests of the proposed enterprise. THE SITE SELECTED is a beautiful tract of land lying between the Klingle and the Woodley roaus to the west of the Zoological Park and adjoining on the north Woodley Park. Those who drive out the Wood- ley road can see a portion of this, property which fronts on that road just cast of thecoun- the Itne of € which the Ki electric road. necticut avenue extended, along Creek Company is building an The location of this site in ite general relation to prominent points in the ; jocality is skown by the sketch map which ac- companics this article ‘QHE IFT oF TWo crtzeNs ‘The property thus secured 1s the gift of two citizens, Mr Francis G. Newlands and Mr. Pierre Waggaman. The largest share of the fourteen and a half acres is given by Mr. New- lands. He donates the best portion of what 13 | known as the Clark tract. which contains some twenty-two acres. The eight and a-balf acres given by Mr. Newlands comprises practically alt of the higu ground in that tract, He pur- chaued this property about twe yeary ago, pay- ing for it the sum of 7125.00. ‘This 1 nearly 36,000 per acre. In addition he has given the committee an option on five acres more | yhich will afford @ troutage on Connecticut avenue extended. He agrees to let them have this ground for the same price he paid for it two | yearsago. Considering that the ground selected is the choicest part of the entire tract and does not include those portions which are less avail- able it is estimated that the value of the eight and a half acres ou the basis of the price paid is at least $8,000 per ncre. As groand » mile forther away from the city has sold in lots the rate of fifteen or twenty thousand dollars Der sere the value of this gift can be apprect- a THE WAGGAMAN TRACT. The tract of land given by Mr. Waggaman | lies to the south of the Clark tract and will bring the line of the new site bordering on that of Woodley Park. It is estimated to Le of equal value with the Clark tract. As may be seen from the map. there isa strip of land of some seven acres known ax the Evans tract which lies between the new site anda xection of Conuecticut avenue extended. It is pro- to complete the frontage on that avenue the purchase of this tract from the Evans heirs, and final arrangements for the purchase of the rty will be made upon the return of one of the heirs from Europe. The entire Property will then comprise twenty-six acree. AN ADMIRABLE SITUATION. ‘The consideration which led the committee to select this site from all the others offered was mainly its admirable situation. It 1a ele- vated ground, nearly three hundred feet above the level of the ocean, and commands a fine view not only of the city, but of the picturesque stretch of country which has become so justiy creek region. Upon the highest point of this ground will be erecied the cathedral. a magnificent building,so designedas to harmonize with surrounding, rich in natural beauty. It will Le a prominent ‘object in the landscape and from any direction it can be seen and admired, an ot ject lesson in architecture which will not fail to have its in- fluence in the development of this region, which is destined in the nesr future to bea handsome residence section of the subur! It was fortunate for the groat enterprise well as creditable to the public spirit of the citizens of the District that the committee was not limited in its choice by any consideration ofeconomy. Other vffers were received of ligible sites which were equally as zenerous in their terms as the one accepted. Valuable land was freely offered and the main point to be devermined by the committee was the velec- tion of a location that was best adapted for the ‘posed uses for the present and for the Ritare- It is the belief of the committee that the site selected meets these requirements. ANOTHER CONSIDERATION. ‘There is another consideration which is in favor of thissite, and that isit is in the line of the new railroad, which will bring it within ten or fifteen minutes of the center of the city. The yximity to the Kock Creek and Zoological Barks insures surronndings that will be for all time attractive and inviting. The inception of this enterprive dates from the gift made by Miss Mann, a resident of this city, whe last spring made a deed of property valued, it is extimated, at €80,000, to be the nucleys of the future endowment of the cathe- dral foundation. Bishop Paret entered heart- ily into the spirit of this undertaking, and in his official capacity, aa well us an individual, he has been mainly instrumental in giving ractical form and’ shape to the enterprise. is views met with stch general favor that ke found the minds of prominens members of the Episcopal church and citizens ripe for action, |d uccordingly en the 3th of the present month & meeting was called. It was held at the resi- dence of Mr Charles C. Glover, aud it will be cousidered in the listory of this enterprise as the first formal step toward the inauguration [of the movement. Bishop Paret was present {and among others whe were there were J. C. Bancroit Davis, Gea. Joi. A Kasson, Chas. C. Glever, Francis G “Newsauds George Trues | dell, Bo. Ware John G. Parke, Col A. T. There was « very strong sentiment expressed in favor of the project by those present, and after a full interchange of views a motion was unanimously adopted thut the bishop at once | appoint a con:mitice of eleven, composed of | four clergy and seven hymen, with power to select a suitable site -abject to the approval of the bishop and to raise {unde for the purchase of the vite. ‘The comm i tree selected by the bishop was as | follows: Kev. Dr. Douglass, chairman; Rev. | Dra, Townsend, McKim and Elliott, and Messrs. |. G. Glover. John A. Kasson, E. J’ Stellwagen, | H. E. Davis, George Trusdell, H. K. Viele and Calderon Carlisle. The work of this commit tee, a8 far as the selection of a site is con- cerned, was completed last evening. THE IDEA OF THE ENTERPRISE. The idea of the enterprise may be summed up as follows: A cathedral establishment is in ecclesiastical law an incorporated body with its dean and chapter, the great church and the connecting buildings tor schools, | charities, &c. It is considered that o great free church, beatiful in its architecture and well equipped in ail its appointments, is more needed in this city than Inuny other. Coming from all parts of the c.untry for purposes of temporary resi- E in echnection with the government aud H otherwise there area large number of persons who live here with no speci! chureh conuce- tion tis thought that sucn persons would come within the iniluences of a cathedral. A OUEAT FIFLD EERE. As has been stated, ‘there will be a greatfield here for the ablest preachers and teachers that the Episcopal church can produce, and there can be little doubt that this oppor- tunity will be seized to convinee our nution that the of organized Christ anity, ignitied —ritu: and the power of high thinking aad plain liv- are not confined to the floman Catholic church. Presbyterians, Methodists and mem- bers of many other religious bodies outside of the Episcopal chuvei have Joined in approving the plan of a great Protestant cathedral for New York city dnd have given their meus to assist in its construction. Similar reasons are likely to mduce « smiiar snpport for the pro- pored cathedral ‘of the Protestant Episcopal church in the District of Columbia.’ A OHAND CHURCH NOT ALL THAT I ¥ECESSARY. It is sometimes supposed that all that is neces- sary to a cathedral 8 a grand church building. The church building is the enter around which clusters schools, houses for the cathedral staff of ciergy, a inall for ecclesiastical guilerings, rooms for the reception of visiting clergy and. This is the idea of the projectors enterprise. It in furthermore ex- pected that the cathedral stat! of clergy wili not ouly be Y goer in supplying the requirements of the cuthedrui itself, but will also be able ander the bishop's direction to minister to many needy parishes and mission stations when their services may be desired. ‘The dioceve of Maryland, it is stated, more per? haps than most any other in this country, pre- sents a field where the servic of clergy who receive their support from cathe- dral foundation could be usiazed to advantage in mission work throughout the adjucent country. ‘A GHEAT NATIONAL MONUMENT. Tt has been suggested as one of the advan- tages of a cathedral that it could become a great natioual monument, a building which could contain the memorinis of America’s great men. It is quite certain that one of the tran- septs of the proposed cathedral will be devoted be no question that he will indorse what has] to’ similar purpose as the poets’ corner of been done. itis proposed to ask from the | Westminster Abbey.
