The religious services in celebration of the Jewish New Year will begin tomorrow evening in the synagogues. In the shrines the cover- ‘ings of the ark and of the scrolls within will be of spotless white, symbol of purity. While the services in all of the synagogues will be of & solemn, even mournful character, they will differ somewhat with the orthodox and hetero- dox congregations. In the churches of the former the members will don their grave clothes, and with praying cloths, or “talith,” about their necks and shocless feet they will enter in the solemn celebration and respond to the chanting of the cantor in the beautiful old traditional melodies that form one of the links of the unbroken chain that connects the an- cient church with the worship of today. In the reformed congregations only the cantor and rabbi will wear the grave clothes. It is, the custom in the Hebrew worebip not to kneél at prayer, the only exceptions being on the sacred days now approaching, when, at a certsin point in the morning service at’ each celebra- tion, rabbi and peo; rostrate themselves. In every synagogue the world over will re- und on New Year's morn the tones of the ram's horn, in obedience to the command of the Lord to Moses, that on the first day shall be a “memorial of blowing of trumpets,” when of areas quaint as the traditional melodies, and sre claimed to be as old as the time of the building of Solomon's temple. The next takes the form of @ trili—“sch'worim;” the third aud last is tremolo—‘truoh,” and the signal of the trampet is at at an end. ; A period of penitence and preparation will | the eve of the New Year be to the faithful, marking the approach of the most volemn seu sous in the Hebrew calendar—“rosh hasch- scnoroh,” the New Year, and ‘jom kippur,” or more properly, “jom ‘kippurim,” the day of atonement, ten days later.
