The fire was started in room eight and the pillow an! mattress bad been burned through evidently did not understand much about the ways of the world, and his lesson cost him @35. He met the usual “friend” and they took » stroll together until they reached the mall, and there they met another colored man, who pro- posed « game. and the wooden casing had taken fire. Had the fire not been discovered when it was the steamer would in all probability have fared ‘the same fate as the steamer Corcoran, but one ‘of the chambermaids was on deck before the flames bad guined much headway and the con- sequence was that the damage amounted to less than +50. A DETECTIVE’s work. s s00n as the company learned of what had happened they sent to Baltimore for Detective W. B. Lyons of the firm of Smith, West & Lyons, and that officer reached here later in ‘the afternoon. He went aboard the boat and made what inquiries he wanted and was par- ticular to notice the location of the differen rooms, which may hereafter play an important t in the proceedings. Pifhe fire occurred about 11 o'clock in the morning. The passengers had ali gone ashore, the chambermaids had made up their beds and John Jones, colored, the saloon man, wae at work as usual. John's business is to look after the scrubbing of the paints and the shining of the metallic ornaments, as well as to fill the water pitchers in the state rooms after the ebambermaids finish their work. JONES WAS LEFT ALONE. In the course of the investigation Detective Lyons learned that the chambermaids were on the lower deck that morning and thatJoneshad Deen left on the upper deck alone. He subse- quently went down stairs for water and stopped in the galley about ten minutes and talked with ‘the cook. Leaving there he returned to the upper deck again. carrying the water with him. From the information received it appeared he was the only one on the deck when the fire broke out, except the chambermaid, who discovered it and gave the alarm. i “Joe” Jones was im room 17 when the alarm was given, and like the others employed on the boat he hastened to the scene of the fire to Jend what assistance be could. Room &, in which the fire started, is on the starboard side, while room 17 a on the port side near the staircase. When the chambermaid called him Jones came from the room mentioned, where he sub- sequently stated he was mopping up some water that be had spilled on the tuor. TRACES OF THE INCENDIARY'S WORK. ‘The pillow in the burned room had been re- moved from its usual place to the other end of the berth and there‘was a single scratch of a match on the paint and the burned match was on the floor The statements of the watchman, the lookout man, the chambermaids and the cooks agree as to the movement of Jones. und from their statements Jones was alone on the deck part of the time and was absent about ten minutes, about the time Detective Lyons thinks the fire burned. In order to make a complete intestigation of the case and secure the ire fiend if possible Detective Lyons made the trip on the boat and watched the movements of all the bands em- ployed on the boat He held conversations th Jones from time to time, uusd when the steamer was some distance from Baltimore this orning he informed him that he would be locked up upon the arrival of the steamer in Balumore. ARRESTED IN BALTIMORE. It was about 3. a.m. when the steamer reached her wharf, and Jones was held in custody until later in the morning, when be was brought over here by the officer on a train. Jones was taken before Judge Miller and ar- raigned on a charge of arson. He waived an examination and Judge Miller heard the state- ment of Detective Lyons. The prisoner was thereupon committed for the action of the grand Jury in default of £3,000 bail. No motive can be assigned for such an act onthe part of the prisoner, and Detective Lyons says — only way be can account for it is that wi and women bave ruined him and ptoos im entirely. Jones will have to remain in jail until after the grand jury acts upon the case. The evidence thus far is purely circumstantial, although Detective Lyons is contident that he Will be uble to make a case against the prisoner. sonics Divorce Cases Filed. Vietoria Johnson, nee Robinson, has, by Mr. | BR Ford Coombs, filed a bill for divorce from Peter Johnson. She states that they were married March 5, 1885, and have had three children, one of whom is living. She charges desertion on July 19, 1387. Louise Schmidtman has, by Mr. Irving Will- famson, tiled a bill for a divorce from Herman Schmidtman. They were married in Novem- ‘Der, i882, lived together til 1599, have two children, and she charges that defendant was of quarrelsome disposition, weemed desir- ous of getting separate estate, extorted from her from time to time over 38,00, which he gambled away, and, finally, on July 2, 1859, after endeavoring by threats to Ret more money from her, drove her and the children from the house. "From that time to the present she alleges she has never seen or beard of him and he bus contrituted nothing to the support of his family. — The Record of Deaths.
