Avpavon's.—Anber's charming “Fra Diavolo,” was listened to at Albaugh’s last night by an audience that completely filled the how: and that was evidently determined to be plea-ed. To the critical ear there was much to please and some to condemn. The principals in Mr. Carlton's company want more experience be- fore they can properly sing Aubur's ornate wore, for even the voice of Mise Clara Lane, which is abundant in volume, even if it some- times lacks sweetness, is hardly flexible enough for the delicate work of Zerlina. This young woman, however, deserves warm for the honest and conscientious manner in which # has filled every role that has been assigned her. She is an earnest and painstaking singer and has developed into an excellent actress. Her acting in Zerlina was all that could be desired and in the chamber scene she was piquant and atthe same time maidenly modest. Some of her vocal work was really artistic, notably the well-known soug, “On Yonder Rock Reclining, Which fully justiiied the encore it received. It was an ambitious attempt in Mr. Carleton to assume the title role, for the score is written for a tenor, but there is no one else in the com- peny who conld come anywhore near singing the part. With some tran«positions Mr. Carle- ton was satisfactory and his interpolated song in the second act was artistically given. The cavatina with which the last ect commences of course had to be cut. Mr. Carleton looked and acted the part perfectly and hie death scene was very dramatic. Messrs. J. K. Murray and Bigelow farnishod ‘a great deal of fun as the two robbers and the former gentioman sang “Let All Obey” as it has not been heard here since the laie 8. C. Campbell. He richly deserved the double en- core that followed. ir. Fitzgeraid was an ai ceptable Lord Alicash, though one bit of busi- ness was “positively shocking.” and Miss Alice Vincent as Lady Allcash was up to ber usual standard. Mr. Huntley was a fierce-looking | brigadier and sang the part so well that there seemed to be no excuse for his cutting the song “I Loved Hee So” in the last act. The chorus did excellently. Tonight the company will close its season with “The Gondoliers.” Pxor. barstox’s Evucatep Hoxses.—Next week's attraction at Albaugh’s will be Prot. D. M. Last night about 11 o'clock Sandy Clark, a colored man from “Foggy Bottom,” visited the observatory grounds with two companions, and before he returned over the back fence he re- ceived a dose of bird shot in the face from Watchman George Watts’ gun. The result is that he is now in the hospital, and when he re- covers he will probably have to visit another institution. Sandy evidently thought there were water- melons in the observatory garden, for he had with him a large carving knife, such as might be used to open a red ripe melon. But Sandy's anticipated feast did not materialize, for the watchman was on the lookout for intruders be- cause of the manner in which the fruit trees had been treated. Sandy was barefooted and hat but he was not so dark as to prevent the watchman from seeing him, and as he stole quietly through the ground with his companions he suddenly heard ‘a voice call “Halt!” Then the watchman ordered the men to re- treat, and Sandy, not doing as commanded, received the load of bird shot in the face. This angered Sandy and he showed fight. He drew the carving knife on the watchman and the Jatter knocked him down with his gun. Sandy's companions deserted him and Po- licemen Gehrman and MeNeely responded to the report of the weapor. ‘They took charge of Sandy and escorted him to the station, where he was charged with bein @ suspicious ‘person and carrying conceul weapons. It was found that one shot had entered his eye and probably destroyed his eyesight. Later in the night he was sent to Freedman’s Hospital. where he is likely to remain for some days. and until he recovers his case cannot be tried. ae COMING TO WASHINGTON.
