EUROPK AT THE FAIR Interest Felt on the Continent in the Colum- bian Exposition. ‘M. Proust, art commissioner to the Chicago fair from France, says that at the coming meet- ing of the committee on the world’s fair, at which Ministor Roach will preside, he will snb- mit « plan to enable France to be splendidly represented at the exhibition. Among other things he will propose to send to Chicago plas- ter casts of the art objects in the Trocadero | Museum, showing the progress of French archi- tecture from the earliest times up to the pres- ent day. “These,” he said in an interview, “will just suit for external adorument if the directors will give France a separate art build- | img.” The directors, he added, might greatly id him in his task by guaranteeing artists agninst all loss by insuring their pictures, by constrneting galleries which sbali be in every way safe, and by conveying objects of art free from New York to Chicago. VIEWS FROM THHOUGHOUT FRANCE. The Associated Press correspondent in Paris hes made inquiries among the United States consuls in Frauce concerning the disposition of the manufacturing classes in their districts toward the Chicago fair. Mr. Oscer F. Williams, consul at Havre, says: “Thear much talk about the exhibition and there is much good feeling toward the enter- prise; but it is too early to look for either en- ergy or apathy.” r. F. is, consul at St. Etienne, says: “The exhibition has not been exploited in this part of France, and until it is pressed strongly upon the attention of the public in Europe I do not think itcan be said that there is any real opinion concerning it. In short, 1 hear little said in favor of it and less againet it. The present opinion and situation is one of indif- ference so far as the public is concerned.” Mr. Charles P. Williams, consul at Rouen, says: “At present manufacturers are absorbed in watching the effect of the MeKinley bill upon their fabrics in the American market, and it is too soon to arrive at any conclusion. The consequences of the passage of their own tariff act on the eve of adoption are an object of solicitude. Until these problems are solved they will not direct their attention to Chicago with longing eyes.” Mr. H. D. Bennett, consul at Nantes, says: “This consular district is rot at present very enthusiastic about the Chicago exhibition. Some few parties will, doubtless, participate, but not many. They are asking whether it is worth the trouble and expense; whether it is worth while to expose their products to foreign customers so long as the tendency ix toward | high protective tariffs, that might in future render their commercial relations difficult or impossible.” ir. Edinund B. Fairfield, cons! at Lyons, says: “I think there is a fair degree of interest in this city in the Columbian exhibition. Those who now do business with the United States, or such as think there is a fair prospect of intro- ducing themseives, will make an exhibit at Chicago. ‘This is ‘all that could be expected from any city.” ‘The reports from the other consuls are much the same. No INTEREST IN PORTUGAT. A high official in Lisbon, when asked by the Associated Press correspondent concerning the prevailing opinion in Portugal in regard to the Chicago exhibition, said: “So far as Lean ascer- tain there is absolutely no interest taken in this country in the fair. Several months since the Hon. George 8. Batchelier, the United States minister resident here, communicated the in- Vitation to the Portugal government, but no response except a formal acknowledgment 6f the letter has been received. The present financial condition of this kingdom would pre- clude any considerable expenditure on the part of the government. As there are so very few manufactures and other industries that would be benefited by an exhibit at Chicago, I doubt if this country will he represented there in a First class—First premiums, Jas. Nomore bodies have been found, though © aumber of national way.” ‘The king has expressed a hope to send commissioners to Chicago during the fair for the purpose of study und examination, but beyond that 1 doubt if Portugal will be represented.” GERMANY TO BE FULLY REPRESENTED. Privy Councillor Wermuth of the department of the interior, the lately appointed German commissioner to the Chicago fair, has now commenced work in earnest. He infurmed the Associated Press Berlin correspondent that he had prepared his printed matter and had sent out communications to all the leading houses. It was yet too early to say much as to the par- ticipation of German manufacturers, but the German government was in great sympathy with the undertaking, and he, as iterepresenta- tive, wouid do all in his power to see that Ger- mary was fully and worthily represented ut Chicago. Mr. Wermuth expects to visit Chi- cago some time during the coming winter, in order to make the necessary arrangements. United States Consul General Edwards at Berlin says that it is of the utmost importance for the Chicago committee to appoint some one in Berlin to represent the exhibition who would have power to confer with the German commissioner and to give all necessary infor- mation and aid. He hopes that ex-Consul General Waller will come to Berlin in person soon, or else send a ewitable representative. MEXICO AND ITS BUILDING. ‘The government has approved the selection made of ground for Mexico at the Chicago ex- position, provided that a bridge be built and the drainage be improved. THE TURKS WILL SEND SOMETHING. The Hon. Zachary T. Sweeny, United States consul to Turkey, said the other day in an in- térview with the Associated Press correspond- ent: “The public sentiment in the Ottoman empire in regard to. the Chicago exhibition is one of a kindly and growing mterest in its sue- cess. There was a chill of disappointment when Chicago instead of New York was chosen | as the exhibition city, but this feeling is being followed by oue of expectancy, doubtless due to the very kind attitude taken by the press of the empire in regard, to Chieago. The Turkish, Greek, French and English papers issued here all gladly publish any information I can furnish them. If one takes into account the distance and slight trade between the two countries, the limited variety of Ottoman products that can be exhibited with profit and the very mild type of energy that characterizes the orient, I think that the Turkish exhibit at Chicago will be a fairly good and creditable one.” = —_+ee— A Statue to Henry Ward Beecher, The ceremonies attending the unveiling of the Beecher statue next Wednesday in Brook- lyn will be of an interesting character. ‘The ceremonies open with prayer.
