2 THE EVENING. STAR: WASHINGTON. D.c. MONDAY, JUNE 22. 1891. INDIANS AT ‘How Keligious Services Are Conducted at the Pine Kidge Agency. {TUE DEVOTIONAL MANNER AND ATTENTION OF THE RED MEX AND SQUAWS—A MINISTER WHO com- BINES SEVERAL DUTIES—POLYGLOT SIXGING—a SERMON IN THE DAKOTA LANGUAGE. tall Correspondence of the Evening Star. Pixe River Acexcr, 8. D., June 15, 1891. Ethnological students who have made the re- ligious life of the North American Indian » special study know of no period in thered man existence when he did not worship God. At times the savage idea of the Almighty was not in harmony with more civilized beliefs, but m a general way it must be evident to the impar- | tial observer that there is a close relationship | between the spiritual theories of the white man and the practices of his more or less copper- colored brother. The Indian is naturally Teligious. He is superstitious, and there are | but few human beings who are superstitious | and who are not more or less under the | influence of religions ideas’ Much has been written of those rites through the medium of which the Indian was accustomed to communi- cate with the Great Spirit, bat only little attention has been given to the manner in which the semi-civilized Sioux now hold public communion with their Maker. Pine Ridge agency has been and is the scene of active religiousendeavor; this much mast be apparent on any Sunday to those who are here aud interested. Three denominations—Episcopalian, Presby- terian and Roman Catholic—compete for the deeds of gathering into their respective | folds the greatest number of sunburned souls, Ido not know whether the Episcopalians ‘or the Roman Catholics are in the lead, but I went yesterday to see how the Sioux wor- shiped God in accordance with the dictates of his conscience and the regulations made aud provided by the Episcopal church. ‘THE EPISCOPAL CHURC! An interesting edifice is the little brown structure in which Pine Bidge Episcopalians rejoice. Five monthe ago and the building ‘was filled with maimed and suffering men, and children, who had escaped with lives from that ‘awful morping’s strife at ‘ounded Knee, and in the place Soars whence esterday song snd prayer ascended the groans Re sided sud mutilated Indians but s little while ago filled the then malodorous atmos- 5 phere. contrast was complete. Bright sunshine had succeeded the snows of January fina the sullen nature of the wintry days was beneath the waves of summer verdure. ‘From some of the lowly houses at the agenty and over the ridges, from some of the camps a mile or two away, came the Indians who snade up the Episcopal congregation. The sun's | rays were fiercely hot, but the squaws| and little girls ftramped, along | without | giving any apparent heed to the ther-| mometric conditions. Parasols—some of them quite expensive affairs—shaded the bare heads, while extra warm shawls, dyed in superheated | hues, protected the shoulders and arms. Sev- eral of the women wore shoes, but the major- ‘ity preferred the infinitely more artistic and comfortable moccasins. The little ones, how- er, were shod after the civilized fashion, but not with sRoes such as civilized Provle wear: their footgear consisted simply of rectangular leathern boxes that would as nearly fit the foot of a precipice as the extremities of | Indian or any other kind of children. Small wonder the Indian has an aversion for shoes. If the responsible authorities would only give him such shoes as were made for human feet moccasins might lose some of their popularity. A HOT SUNDAY. It was just as hot yesterday morning as it was on that day when Henry Ward Beecher startled his congregation by repeating the slightly profane remark which one of his per- spiring auditors had given utterance to just before the service. The heat was intense, and from the vicinity of White Clay creek arose the moisture which afterward fell in torrents. Butterflies fluttered everywhere and big bluebottle flies were as musical as blue bottle flies can ever hope tobe. Occasion- ally @ stray cloud would obscure the sun's pri- mary brightness, but only for a moment, and then the shadow would ripple over the prairie and be lost. It was an country Sabbath. A frequently disturbed bell called just as church bells do everywhere and the response ‘was a satisfactory one. As the women and children arrived they at once entered the church, but the men, just other men oo cage ap pecs in on the outside un! service La 4 nm begin, chatting meanwhile about the weather and the crops, and such other mat- | ters as were of present interest. Inside the F of the squaws present was the happy possessor of anew shawl, che did not display that fact by word or ‘ction, nor did any other ‘Ww seem to be aware of such an individu- desirable state of affairs. The ciildren ved FE ing, new straw hats and a good many bright ribbons made the youngsters, for ‘once, positively attractive. ISDIANS AT CHURCH. They segregate the sexes at Pine Ridge, the ‘women being on the north side of the aisle and ‘the men on the south. The women’s side was almost fully occupied, but there were less than adozen men present. Two or three of these wore suits of black cloth, the coats being of the m Prince Albert variety; others were clad in citizens’ dress, not expensive as to ma- terial, but clean; two were non-com- missioned officers of scouts and they wore the regulation United States uniform. One particularly amiable gentleman was gloriously arrayed in pale blue-striped seersncker and bore in a conspicuous place on the front of his Yest 8 ticket which proclaimed to all beholders that that vest measured thirty-eight inches sround the chest and cost 75 cents. Maj. Pearce of the Sioux commission, a sergeant of infantry and myself were the only white people present. ‘The interior of the church was plain. Walls and ceiling were whitewashed—some time ago. Window frames were Gothic and the glass was opaque. In front of the altar and extending ‘across the church wasatriple arch of wood, the points touching the ceiling. Covering the | aud don't know any fifth hymn, sung heartily to “Arlington.” Both text and discourse, like all other portions of the service, were in the Dakota language. Even to those who understood little or nothing of the northwestern tongue the sermon was impressive: its brevity would have aroused the commendation of the most indifferent. The behavior throughout the entire service was simply admirable, and during the sermon the only interrupting sound came from a little and almost white baby, who cried for its luncheon and who got it without delay; the hungry wail wus succeeded by grunts of infantile satisfac tion as tne mite of half-breed humanity buried its shapeless little nose in the yielding surface of its ever-ready source of supply. Catechist Silas Red Dog attended to the offertory, while the Rev. Mr. Smith read aloud the customary exhortations to. charity. Some of the Indians contributed a little, as much as any of them could afford to. Another hymn was sung—this one to the tune of “Duke Street '—and the morning worship was con- cluded. The men moved home to their re- spective dinners, just as they do in cities, and the women also moved immediately homeward, just as they do not do anywhere else. There was no stopping to gossip, no ap- parent desire to shake bands with the preacher, no effort to keep the sexton away from his mii day meal; no nothing like it is in Washington. But then’ these people here are ouly Indians titer. Gro. H. Hannes. SCATTERING OF CRAP SHOOTERS. Officers Make = Raid on the Crowd on the Flats. ‘There was the usual assemblage of “crap shooters,” “‘sweat players” and others, pro- fessional and amateur gamblers, on the river flats adjacent to the Long bridge yesterday, notwithstanding the wet weather. On account of numerous complaints about the gamblers and the crowd attracted there by them Lieut. Vernon determined to break them up and he detailed Policeman Jones and other ofticers to do the work. The officers in citi- zens’ dress went in the direction of the crowd, where fully two hundred boys and men were either putting down their nickels and dimes or were looking at the others. ‘The officers reached a spot near where the game was in operation, and saw on a piece of oilcloth, in green paini, the following: “1-2-3--4-5-6. Over Even Under 7 aa 7 Pays 3 for 1.” Abe Coleman, a young colored man, was banker, and he was niauipulating the bones. ‘The officers could hear such expressions a “Come on, good seven,” “Dat rusty six,” “Over seven,” “Stay away, ‘leben.” ‘This was all after the officers had crossed the picket line, and when they got ready a start in the direction of the crowd caused an exciting scatter and “Banker” Coleman threw his bones in the river, but could not get rid of the cloth. There were several foot races on the railroad track in both directions, and the players looked @ little frightened while the olticers walked away with Abe under arrest. Lawyer Closs represented Abe in the Police Court this morning. Sudge Malier heard the testimony, and Abe was committed to jail in default of 7500 bail to await the action of the grand jury. ——— VICTIMS OF THE CLUB, Two Prisoners Who Were Beaten by the Po- licemen Who Arrested Them. “Policemen’s clubs are getting to be danger- ons weapons,” was Judge Miller's remark in the Police Court this morning during ‘the trial of a man named John Caton, who was charged with assaulting Police Officer Jett in Georgetown yesterday. The policeman did not have a scratch or scar abont him, but poor Caton's head was sore, and the policeman’s club had inflicted the injuries. Caton had been drink- ing, and the affair happened about 3 o'clock in the day. ‘Two citizens had been summoned to help the officer, but Caton would not let them take him. Judge Miller thought that the affair happen- ing as it did in the day time the officer ought to have taken him without using so much violence. Caton, however, has not the best record in the world, and there was no doubt from the testimony that he struck the officer. He was held guilty of assault, but the judge only fined him #2. In Judge Kimball's court Sarah Reed was a victim of a policeman'selub. If her head was injured as badly as the blood and bandages in- dicated she is likely to suffer from the effects of her injuries for some time. Sarah has been arrested many times and this time she was ar- rested in the vicinity of Maryland avenue as a vagrant. Policeman Fenton swore against her in court and she accused Policemau Byers of having beaten her. The judge sent her down for two months. ee AMUSEMENTS. A grand excursion by Simon's Commandery. No.1, K.T., of this city, St. John’s of Baltimore and Jerusalem of Westchester, Pa., will be made to Brandywine Springs on St. John’s day, June 24, leaving the Baltimore and Ohio station here at 8 a.m. In point of scenery and historic interest no point could be chosen more appro- priate than this, and with three bands of music and all sorts of entertaining attractions the ex- cursion should be a great success. Clerically clad was Catechist Silas Red Dog— son of that once famous but now dead chief, the and gave the bell Fope s few concluding pulls; but there was nothing perticalatly Episcopalian or denomina- tional in the summer clothing worn by the Bev. Alfred C. Smith, upon whom, in the abe sence of Pastor Couk, the conduct of the + service devolved. Ordinarily Mr. Smith, who ise half-blood Yankton, is in char; but few ministers could. Mr. Smith does it, and docs it well. There was a mo- ment or two of silent prayer and then the lergyman announced « hymn. The white members of the congregation sang as much as could remember of “From Green- Tey Mountains," they knew they all right as to the tune, and went investigation developed the fact that the Indians were singing a translation that ¢rund old missionaryhyma.
