Some Facts About Him, His Career and EH Family Connections. To the Paitor of The Evening Star: I am glad to see « disposition on the part of ‘Tur Stan not to sentence Thornton Hains both to the gallows and afterward to eternal perdi Gon before the jury has had time to hear his case. I have known the young man and hi family for years. Many of the recent da aging statements made about him are false. ‘The worse things I ever knew about him were these: First, he is something of a “snob;” sec- .d, he came within five minutes of being in that notorious drunken frolic with Harry Martin, the late Edward Hannegan and others, last winter, which terminated in breaking into the White House. I bave uothing to say abont the F dead boy except to pray for the repose of is soul. Iwill say this, however, about the fash youth who probably in self-defense nsed the dangerous weapon he nor any other man has a moral right to cazry: He is not the devil the papers of the past few days make bim out fe ba Moreover, be ie” eapectally nti- fled to justice, if not mercy, at the bands of the Washington press. His name shall not be written by me here avd in this connection. It is enrolled, where it justly belongs, bigh on the list of those who made this country what itis. For biy years be has honored his state and name and counte among his friends “the bravest and the best” who he ived since the days of bis boyhood’s friends, President and Mrs. Madison. Col. Peter C. He has i millions of dollars for this government and has so far accounted for every cent of it In fact, Ihave heard men who worked under Col. Hains complain that he was too careful in making contractors do their full duty. On the who form the Potomac tlats’ committee say that if ail the money appropriated for public works was as wisely expended as that handled by Col. Peter C. Verhaps a man deserves no especial credit for being honest, but whes one conirasts his record with that of a good many other people not unknown to Washington contractors a Washingtonian at least ought to fee! very kindly toward the distinguished officer and gentleman whose wayward son has dragged his stainless name into the sensation of the hour! The young man’s mother ix one of the most gracious and accomplished women in Washing- ton. She has stood thix ordeal with wonderful nerve, and often in ber own infinite sorrow iv aeard to express the deepest sympathy for the family of Mr. Hannegan. There are three suns. One stood bigh at West Point, where he re- cently graduated, and is now an officer in the army. The other is at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he stands well. It is, tomy mi face, impossible for the second son, Thornton, to be the devil the reporters, thoughtlessly per- haps, make him. I admit it adds to the lurid- ness of the sensation, but it is contrary te the facts that will be brought out at the proper time and piace. The truth is Thornton Hains 38 au unusually clever und accomplished youth. It will be proved that he did not hill his young friend. to whom he was warmly attached, in cold blood or without provocation. As to his alleged linsons, they have nothing to do with the case, though I have reason to doubt the truth of the whole story. Thornton did work when he had it todo. “He has been sub- ject to melancholy moods when he was ill—he 4s not as strong as bis other brother—and if he had been removed from the aliurements of Washington “society” he would have developed my sterling traits which are his by right of inberitance.
