He Talks Pleasantly of His Trip to the Hot Springs—Not Going to Resign. Secretary Noble, Mra. Noble and Private Sec- retary Ryan returned to the city last evening on the Chicago limited. They left here the early part of May and have spent the time mainly at Hot Springs, Ark., and St. Louis. They returned by way of Chi- cago and spent several days there. Mrs. Noble visited her sister, Mrs. Dr. Fisher, 553 Jackson Boulevard. Secretary Noble was at the department today looking very much im- proved by the rest of the past few weeks. When he went away he was feeling rather tired and worn out, but he is now completely rested and Teady, as he expresses it, to go to work again. THE HOT SPRINGS RESERVATION. The Secretary spent some three weeks at Hot Springs, and while his visit there was to some extent for his own benefit, he had in view the benefit of that famous resort. He desired to become familiar with the surroundings and Present condition of the reservation, for the reason that he will soon be called upon to make leases to run for twenty years for the privilege of maintaining “bath houses. There are valuable privileges and the secretary wished to ascertain by personal in- pection whether the rights of the government and the comfort of the numerous visitors were being cared for by those who reap « rich pe- cuniary reward from the profits of the leases. SOME OF HIS OBSERVATIONS. In talking about the Hot Springs today to a Sra reporter the Secretary said that he found the bath houses in a dilapidated condition for the most part, as well as devoid of modern conveniences and appliances. He intends to direct that on or before July 6 two of the bath houses be removed, namel; and the “Big Iron.” In their places handsome buildings will be erected by the lessees as soon as the new contracts are made. ‘The Secretary ‘ays that he also found that the custom had grown up of charging 15 cents at the public baths for the Privilege of bathing. This charge, he said, was made only after the regular bath hours and was justi- fied by the attendants on the ground that many persons preferred to pay soinething in order to bathe at atime when the general public was not admitted. The Secretary was of the opin- ion that the practice was a bad one, as there ought not to be any charge at the public baths. He therefore directed that no charge should be made in the fature. THE MOUNTAIN XEGLECTED. He also found that the mountain on the res- ervation was ina neglected condition, and he directed that the ground should be cleared and inclosed as a park and that steps be built up from ‘the town, so that the public could enjoy the improvement. He decided upon other cl of a minor character, and is now ina position to direct the administration of affairs ‘there with more intelligence. The Secretary is impressed with the importance of this resort, and he in- tends to make it more sightly, as well as more modern. BANQUETTED AT LITTLE ROCK. Before leaving Arkansas the Secretary went to Little Rock to see Judge Caldwell of the United States circuit court, who succeeded the Secretary as the colonel of the regiment that was stationed in Arkansas during the war. The people of Arkan- sas remember the Secretary when he was Col. Noble and was the military com- mander in their midst, and as evidence of their kindly recollection of him the leading citizens of Little Rock tendered him a banquet which was one of the most enjoyable events of his vacation. XO IDEA OF RESIONING. ‘The Secretary smiled pleasantly when refer- ence was made to the rumors that have been agoat regarding his retirement from the cab- inet and also his appointment to some foreign mission He said that such stories had originated without either his knowl- edge or ration. It is true, be said, that ie gentleman who had lensed his residence in St. Louis, had given up the lease before its expiration, but it was en- tirely on his own motion, as he had bought a home and wanted to cccupy it. He would have been glad if the lease been carried out to the end of the term, which ded with the close of the present administration. He added that there was absolutely no founda- tion for the rumors regarding his leaving his present position. THE COLUMBUS CONVENTION, Gossip of Ohio People Here About It—Mec- Kinley's Victory Predicted. Considerable interest in taken here in the Columbus convention and such of the Ohio re- publicans as could not attend satisfy them- selves by predicting a sweeping victory for Mr. McKinley this fall, ‘The report that Mr. Sherman will seek no in- dorsement from the convention is received with considerable satisfaction by those who had feared that there might be an open and bitter factional fight in the convention between the supporters of Mr. Sherman and those of Gov. Foraker. The prospect of this being sup- ressed it is thought relieves any danger to Mr. Mckinley from the rivalry of these two leaders. ‘THE WORK IN THE CAMPAIGN. It is expected that during the campaign there will be a sharp struggle between the two fac- tions to get control of the legislature, but it is thought that this will help, rather thau injure, the chances of the state executive ticket, as it will make the cam; more active and bring out more votes. With the thing settled before- hand that this or that man should have the senatorship if the republicans controlled the legislature, those who were thus left out of it might sulk. ‘The field being open for all, how- ever, gives all an interest in success.
