4 THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: ‘THURSDAY. * -May 31, 1901. ‘CROSBY 8. NOYES. - Editor. THE EVENING STAR bas the fullest Local Cirealation of any Newspaper in the World, ané as an Advertising Medium ts worth mere than all the other papers published in Washiagton. ———— ‘The third party has come. According to its name, it is the people's party, and its princi- ples are those of the Farmers’ Alliance and the Knights of Labor. For a while it seemed prob- able tbat action would be deferred until nearer the campaign of 1892, but the radical element prevailed over the leading mindsand the party was born. Although the conservative influ- ence was defeated in this matter it was success- ful in resisting the impulse to graft on the organization all the various isms and issues that characterize the times, and in causing the statement of principles to be much less wild and contradictory than bad been expected from the incongruous elements of the conven- tion. This may in some measure counter- balance the effect of a too early movement. It is significant of a certain preperation and cobesiveness in the leading elements among the political reformers who look to the formation of « third party to remedy all public ills and private mis- fortunes and embarrassments. ‘The subtreas- ury scheme, the income-tax proposition, the threatened seizure of surplus railway lands, the control of railroads by the governtaent—these are possibly conservative ideas according to the standards of conservatism set up by the alliance and the knights, though other politi- eal thinkers will consider them at least suffi- ciently progressive for any party planning to secure a substantial following in this country. Free trade is thinly veiled under periphrastic expressions, and free and unlimited silver coinage i set in the foreground of the platform. This convention, although mak- ing « platform for a party docs not un- dertake to nominate its candidates. That is a work which may be better done nearer the time for the candidates to have a reason of be- ing. Some unsympathetic critics say that the platform might well have beon launched at the time the crew wore rendy, but the new party was evidently not formed to pleaso such fas- tidious people. The people’s party 1, it ap- pears, © great scheme which requires to be handled earefally in sections and put together when everything is ready. First the seed, then the blade, then the ear, last the full corn in the ear. In other words, fitting the agricultural ile to the history of the agricultural move- ment leading to the party, firet the Farmers’ Alliance, then the Ocala call to arms, after- ward the Cincinnati convention, and lastly’ the events to come next year, culminating in victory or defeat. Only one party can choose its President, but it is possi- ble for the present movement by pressure of public sentiment to have a modicum of success without carrying the election. It is this fact that gives the third party movement signifi- cance in American politics. So far as practical results in 1892 are concerned the most thst the third party men can expect is to prevent pres- idential election by the people, and to cause the choice of a democratic President by the House. They may expect to carry the prosi-| dential election of 1896. Before that date both of the old parties count upon the collapse of the new organization. So that for the present the democrats, frou interested motives, smile upon the movement and wish it strength and | success-at least until 1892—while the republ cans, from equally interested motives, frown upon it, a Several important relizious bodies are in ses | sion. The most general interest perhaps at- taches to the general awembly of the Presb: terians at Detroit, which convenes today, and which is expected toact upona proposed revision of the creed. Although the work of the commit- tee is expressly on lines marked out by those leaders of the denomination who hold implic- | itly to the general doctrines of Calvinism, there is opposition in influential quarters to any con- siderable changes even in form of statement. ‘The principal points of difference are those con- cerning the eternal decrees and the prominence to be given to the doctrine of final reprobation. The present assembly is not expected, under | the constitution of the church, to settle the belief of the church in these grave matters, | but they will form the subject of consideration | in the assembly of 1892. —<——-—___ While there will be naturally opposition to the incoming of Russian Hebrews with little or no means of livelihood into this republic. an antiSemite agitation is altogether another matter. Such an agitation is threatened in England. Londoners may well put down the “sweaters” —that is, the tailors who pinch their employes into a pauper’s grave, and eract laws to restrain undesirable immigration. Bat a general clamor against Israclites because some of the Russian members of the race are said to be on the parish is unjust .and irrational. The Jewish people have always taken care of their indigent, of whom there are perhaps fewer than of any people who ever lived. sotlveibaey siesta eee The Servian government calms public feel- ing by confiscating all the editions of the op- position newspapers.
