Capital Tennis Games at the Tournament. ‘MANY LADIES ENJOY THE FINE PLAYING ON THE BACHELORS’ COURTS—WORK OF SOME OF THE CRACK PLAYERS OF THE COUNTRY. Eleven matches were played yesterday in the tennis tournament that is.in progress on the courts of the Bachelors" ¢Tub, at the corner of 17th and P streets, and su¢h progress was made that the finals in the more important series should be played today if there is a con- tinuation of the fine weather that has con- tributed so much to the success ®f the tourna- ment so far. There seems to have been no ‘abatement in the public interest in the sports, as the attendance yesterday was quite as large as on the former days, being composed very largely of ladies. The clouds that obscured the direct rays of the sun had a beneficial in- fluence on the play and kept the men going at @ more lively pace than on the day before. ‘WOODWARD'S FINE PLAY. The first match of the day was s genuine surprise to the crowd, resulting in the defeat of Borden in the open single tournament. ‘Woodward was the victor. playing a game that surprised even his most sanguine admirers. He appeared to be in the best of condition and ed a careful, swift game that completely Bonplussed his antagonist. Borden found his placing of little or no avail. as his, man was on spot in all but half adozen cases. Wood- ward was like s wall to the returns of Borden, and his own play was accurate and hard enough to make his winning but a matter of time. In the first set he won the first four games and then Borden won a game witha rush. This exhausted his luck, however, and, Woodward won the next two gamesand the set by means of long patience, the scores of these final games being very close. In the second set Woodward | began by winning three straight games and Borden took the fourth one. It looked for the moment as if he had g show for the set, but Woodward won the next game and took too long aiead to be caught. Borden won the sixth and Woodward the seventh and eighth. ‘The score of the match was 6-1, 6-2, in favor of Woodward. ANOTHER PRETTY MATCA. Another interesting ma‘ch had been begun in the meantime between V. G. Hall and Wright for a place in the final round. It was, perhaps, th prettiest tennis that has been seen on the courts so far this year. Hall, how- ever, soon showed himself to be the more accu- rate player of the two, and his placings were nearly always effective. Wright did some re- markable lobbing and pulled himself out of several very bad places in this manner. The game was not notable for its close net pla; majority of the bails passing two or three fee. above. "In the first set Hall had matters pretty much all his own way, winning by the score of 6-2, but in the second set Wright put on some extra force ‘o his serve and by means of hard driving at times and s wonderful amount of chead work in his game won by the score of 6-4. ‘The early part of the thirdand final set seemed tobe close enough to put the outcome in doubt, and the men won alternately on their serves. Wright, however, seemed to become somewhat distress-d through his hard work, and weakened in the latter part of the set, which was won by Hall, 6-3. WOODWARD PICKS UP. This left but oa: set to be played in the third round, that between Woodward and E. A. Hall for a place in the finals to meet V. G. Hall for the championship and the prize, but this was not begun until most of the spectators had left. It was so late that it could not be fin- ished on accoun* of the darkness and at the conelusion of the play the sore stood one set for Hall, 8-6, and the second set tied, 5-5. This will be continued today. Woodward lost val- uable ground by his play in the first set, which Was not up to his standard. He seemed to fear the drive shots of his antagonist and this unnerved him. He improved as the set pro- gressed, however, and pulled out to « very good showing. In the second set he made remarkable exhibition of playing against odds, bringing the score toatie at Sall after Heli had won five to his one. ‘THE DOUBLES. Good progress was made in the open double matches, both prelim:1 ~y series and all but one of the first round of matehes being played off. In the preliminaries Woodward and Bor- den beat Wooten aud Sheibley, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Wright and Billi>gs bea: Metealf and Frown, 63,61. In th first round Woodward and Borden will play the eter brothers today, and the winner will play the Hall brothers, they having defeatei Chuton and Goodfellow, 6-2, €4. In the lower se: ion of the sours. list MeCawley and Ds; 1w 1 beat Shields and Blair in the first roa}, 6-1, 6-2, and Wright and Bil- lingy beat the McPh » son brothers, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. ‘The play of the lozii team against Wright and Billings in this match was a surprise to the vis- itors, for they put up a hard, steady team gaine that seemed at one time destined to carry off for them the honor of meeting McCawley and Davidson in the second round. It was quite dusk when the match was decided. DISTRICT SINGLES. The drawings for the District singles took place just before the play began for the day and resulted as follows: Preliminary round, Chambers vs. R. 8. Chilton; §rst round, winner of preliminary vo. M-tealf: Steele vs. Painter; Thompson va Sh-isley; Davidson vs. Wood- ward. The comm:.2e defaulted Chambers, that player not appearing until it was too late, having misunderstood his directions. In the first round Chilton easly defeated Metcalf, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Paicter beat Steele, 10-8, 6-2. Thomp- son beat Sheibley, 6-4, 34,64. The match between Davidson’ and’ Woodward will take today. In the second round Chilton and inter stacte] their match, but could play but one set, which Chilton won, 8-6. This tourna- ment is open to all District’ men who were not beaten by auother District man in the open singles. ‘THE CONSOLATION was also’ begun, being open to District men who were beaten in their first match in the open tournament. The drawings took place Nationals Lose Again to the Columbus in an Interesting Game. “Oh, what did I do?” nimble Jack O'Connor of the Buckeye ball team yelled exultantly as he lined a safe hit out into short left field in the ninth inning yesterday, bringing in Mc- Tamany and winning the game. And the Dleachers gave only feeble groan in reply. Whatever may be said about the Columbus team, they are an active lot of ball players and do not appear to be discouraged even when far behind. They keep pegging away steadily, chirping merrily and waiting for an opening. Then when it comes they take advantage of it and go in to win. ‘The home players have strong antipathy to taking games from their visitors and can be looked upon as royal hosts. They makes “bluff” once ina while at winning, but the visitors bide their time and call at their own pleasure. Yester:lay it looked as though our men had a winning band. They hit the ball savagely and every one played earnestly, but when it came to showing hands it was found to be the same old bluff. HITTING THE BALL. After two men were out in the first inning Paul Hines banged the ball for two bags, Mac- An active little deer gave the men employed at the Zoological Park a lively chase day before yesterday. It was presented to the park by Mra. Lansdale who lives on New Jersey avenue. Capt. Blackburn, the superintendent, had it conveyed to the park and put in the inclosure intended for the deer. The little creature ran along by the fence and at last gave a spring and jumped clean through the fence, passing between the wires that form the upper part of the fence. The animal scampered through the grounds and out upon The park men and a good many others joined in the chase but the deer had the best of it. Mac was brought in on a safe hit by Lohman. In the second Carsey scored on a single, followed by ahit by Beecher and Dnilie’s muff of a high fly from Hines’ bat. ‘The visitors with the score 3 to 0 against them began their slaughter in the third. Easton, MeTamany, Sneed and O'Connor made singles and MeGuire fumbled Wheelock’s bunt. Four runs resulted. Then the home team agnin took the lead. Carsey and Burns were scored by a powerful hit by Hines, who seemed to have all his batting apparel with him yester- day. Toclinth mattersapparently the Nationals made two more in the next inning. McGuire hit sharply for three bage and scored on Hat- Sieid’s single. “Gil,” by clever running, stole two bases and scored on Carsey’s sacrifice. THE USUAL CHANGE. But we had been having our fun too long. The bleachers presented a ruffled sea of shout- ing, hat-waving humanity. “Wait till after this inning,” Crooks yelled, “and then we'll howl.” And he kept his word. They rallie@ up four tallies after two were out. Easton hit for two bags, Wheelock and Crooks for singles and MeTamany sent the ball on an exploring expedition toward Howardtown and made the cireuit in the meantime. To make matters more binding another run was added in the seventh by well placed hits and a sacrifice. In the ninth, with McGuire end Hatfield on bases and two out, Smith stopped the procession to- ward the gates and caused every one to get back to his seat by a scientifically placed single in right. Two runs were scored and the teams were again oneven terms. Carsey failed to reach first. MeTamany hit safely for Colum- bus, though there were many who claimed that the ball reached first before hedid. Sneed sacrificed and sent him to second and nimble Jack O'Connor won the game by hitting over Hatfield's head, and the result was Columbus, 10; National, 9. OTHER GAMES YESTERDAY. .
