The play is taken from Mrs. Wood's well-known novel, and it is presented ina most acceptable manner. In the dual role of Lady Isabel and Madame Vine Miss Gray scored a decided success. She bas taken these characters for some years, and her rep- Tesentations of the jealous wife and the heart- broken mosher are powerful and lifelike. As Barbara Lave, Siiss Dollie Davenport was good, and she sang ‘Then You'll Remember Me” in A sweet, sympathetic voice. Muss Corney, by Mrs. J. H. Sergeant, was quite satisfactory. The remainder of the company is good, aud the stage setting above the average. Again to- night. ‘Tue Manse Baxn's Coxcert.—The Marine Band was greeted by an enthusiastic audience at its appearance at the Academy of Music last night. It was good-natured crowd, too, for there was @ delay in the commencement of the concert of nearly an hour owing to the failure to bring the proper band parts for the program. The “Star ‘Feeagiea Banner,” which was the last upon the program, was the opening num- ber. Just as this was completed the missing music arrived and the program was then car- ried out in due order. The work of the band is, of course, familiar to ail Washingtonians and nearly ail the numbers given last night bad been heard before, yet there wasan added in- terest in listening to the excellent playing of this excelient band, because it had just’ re- turned from an extended tour during which its excellence, both individual and collective, had been acknowledged in every city visited. There was one number on the program that had never been heard by a public atidiencein Wash ington before and that was Mr. Sousa’s symphonic poem, “The Chariot Race.” His eme is taken from Wallace's Ben Hur and he has treated it in a heroic and artistic manner. The start, the progress of the contest, the cheers of the multitude and the triumph of the winning horses are produced with realistic ef- fect and the composition shows the musical devoiepment of Mr. Sousa and also hiscomplete knowledge of the varied and striking effects at his disposal in the band. ‘This, as well us every other number, was vociferously encored. Miss Marie Decca was greeted by a large number of friends, who gave her an enthusi- astic reception. 'She sang the grand aria “Perle du Brezil,” which has become familiar to ali musicians, Mr. Henry Jaeger playing the flute obligato accompaniment. For an encore Miss Decca sang the “Old Folks at Home.” Her second number was a staccato polka by Mulder. Both the “Perle du Brezil and the polka were selected to show the flexibility of the singer's voice and the purity of her ‘vocaliza- tion and the audience seemed to be thoroughly satisfied. Miss Decca accompanied the band on their trip aud shared in their success. Mr. Sousa is proud of his band and the people of Washington are proud of Sousa and his band.
