THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. D. C.. TUESDAY, MAY 5, 1891. OF DE. EDWARD MAYNARD Hila Services to the Dental Profession and Hie Inventions in Firearms. ‘When Dr. Edward Maynard died yesterday at his residence, 1227 19th street, there went out of the world s man whose life had been full of usefulness. Dr. Maynard was an inventor whose ideas were practical and basinesslike— he wasted no time. He was born in Madison, N. ¥., April %, 1813. and his earlier years were filled with evidences of me- chanical ingenuity. In 1835 he became as dentist, and one year later took up his residence in this city, where he con- tinued to practice, with a few brisf intervs until a year aga His discovery of the very great diversity of situation, form nnd capacity of the maxillary antra was made known to the | frculty of the Baltimore College of Dental Sur- | gery 136 and was officiaily acknowledged. 1) has from that time been regarded as of great | © importance in the treatment of disease of the superior maxillaries, is announcement of the existence of dental fibrils, based upon his discovery that sensitive | dentine could be cut with lees pain in particu- lar directions than in opposite ones, was dis- | cussed and the discnssion was reported in the | trammactions of the American Society of Dental Surgeons before the announcement of the dis- covery of such fibrils by the aid of the micro- So far as now known he was the first to aue- cessfully practice (in 1498) the thorough fill- ing, with gold foil, of the nerve cavity, includ- ing the nerve canals, in molar and bicuspid teeth, an operation he introduced in Europe im 1845. In 1857 he ted the chair of theory and practice in the Baltimore College of Dental | iy, Surgery (the first dental college aver estab- | lished). and since then he has heid » Like posi | 5 tion in the facuity of the dental department of | the National University in this city. MIS INVENTIONS IX FIREARDS. Dr. Mayuard’s name is, however, most widely | known by reason of his inventions of firearms and ammunition. He was the author of the) Maynard rifle, of the metallic cartvisige shell, of the fulminate automatically moved priming, which for years dispinced the percussion cap iu the United States and other armies: of the | by which smoota-bure muskets could | be converted into rifles, » a number of | other valuable inventions.” For these the King of Prussia mae the doctor a chevalier of the | Military Order of the Hed Eagle, and the King of Sweden gave him the ,reat medal of an honor but rarely bestowed on a toreigt Atthe recent patent centennial exhibit in | the lecture room of the National Museum one | of the most interesting collections was the one contributed by Dr. Maynard. Yesterday in the Criminal Court, Judge Bradley, the motion for a new trial in the case of Robert Holiand, colored, convicted last week of obtaining money by fale pretenses =| ‘Thomas Bowie, was presented by his counsel, Mr. Cullinane, and argued. The court after reviewing the testimony, fe., overruled the motion, saying he was properly convicted after a fair trial i Mr. Taylor appealed for a light sentence, and Holland asked the merey of the court. ‘The judge said it was an aggravated case, and were it not for his aftliction he would give him the extent of the Inw—tive years. He im- posed a sentence of three years in the Albany penitentiary. Sern The Humane Soctety. ‘The executive committee of the Washington Humane Society held its monthly meeting yes terday and the treasurer reported that the re- ceipts from an entertainment got up for the | benefit of the society by Miss Emma Bettis, public school teacher of the District, amounted | to nearly $200, which she desired should be | med for the erection of adrinking fountain. The committee accepted the donation with gratitude and elected Miss Bettis a life member | Of the socicty and a member of the executive committee of the subcommittee on fountains. ‘The committee also voted to erect at once three | new fountains A taanimous vote af thanks was to the Kev. Dr. Butler for the use of his church and chair for the meeting on the | Sd instant, the proceeds from which amounted to $35.63. ‘To the Baitor of The Eveuinz Star: Your correspondent of Saturday evening re- cites two small adventures with wheelmen. | To him, at least, it is annoying to drive around & dismounted cyclist, but he is in error on one fundamental point. By law a bicycle is a carrie age (thanks to L. A. W.) and thus by law is e1 titled to its full share of the public road. On city pavements, on the sandy country pike or the western prairie trail, I have always found the average wheelman a courteous fél- low, ever sensitive to others’ rights and seldom seeking redress when grudgingly given just room te pass or uneeremeniously crowded inwo the gutter ora pausing team. But it is not @ question of favor; a wheelman has his Fights, and jet him defend them. ECR —— Sentenced ty the Penitentiary. Im the Criminal Court yesterday Edward E. Brent, colored, plead guilty to a charge of housebreaking. was alleged that early in the morning of March 25 be and another (Wm. Poole) broke into the store of Joseph |= B. Dyer and carried off @50 worth of goods. Iu answer to Judge Bradley he sid that Poole got him to watch while he got the things, and he understood that Poole had been sentenced to the Kichmond penitentiary for t sears. conrt sentenced him to the Albany peni- tentiary for four years. ine ‘The Jurors for the May Term, In the Criminal Court today, Judge Hagner, the jurors for May were d. Isane Steinman failed to answer and following were ex- cused: Joseph Redfern, B. K. Viain, Joseph H. Hunter, Beverly Carter. August Schroeder, James Noland, Heinrich Dauue (eighteen years old and unnaturalized), Felix May and Edward Anderson. This leit two vacancies to ‘Al he panel and twenty camex were ordered to be drawn by the court, which was adjourned till wemorrow. ——_ Land Deeded to » Railroad.
