MR. POWDERLY WILL BE RE-ELECTED _ SWEPT BY RUMORS, Reports Unfavorable to the Barings Temporarily Agitate Wall Street. New Yorn. Nov. 15.—Private cables received before the opening of the stock exchange ane nouncing the troubles of Baring Broa and stating that the bank of England, Rothschilds and other Bankers had taken up accounts of Baring Bros. amounting to £15,000,000 created ® profound sensation. Conferences of brokers Were at once bad, and it was decided to have brokers iu every stock that could be handled to bid an advanced price at the Opening 80 as to avert a sudden phar STOCKS OPEN BIGRER. Asaresult prices for nearly all the active stocks opened 14 to 2 percent above last night's close, the extreme gain being made by North- ern Pacific preferred. Then the liquidation of weak accounts set in in full force and ave way rapidly in all directions, Atchison fell 2 per cent, sugar 24, Lackawanna 2, New England 134. Western Union dy and Big Four ‘2}y per cent in the first fifteen minutes, SCENE ON THE EXCHANGE, ‘The stock market was again the scene of wild excitement and a positive panic existed in all portions of the list, stocks being thrown over in the most reckless manuer, and the losses in the first hour's trading exceeded anything seen since the present deciine began. There was rather # firm feeling at the opening, bat the Tumors and private cables which were shown stating that the Barings were in fiuancial diff- culties and that heavy liquidations must come, started the bull rolling immediately and every one was trying to sell, Dealings were simply enormous and the rapidity with which quote- tions melted away was something unprece- dented, there being no halt in the downward movement. Before the end of the hour ‘Lackawanna, Which showed most weakness, although it has connection with the Loudon bankers, dropped 8 per cent to 1241. while Jersey Central lost 6, Northwestern 4, Rock Islana 4, Pallman 5} Atchison 3', and most of the other active stocks from 2 to 4 percent. The Villards were, if any- thing, t ‘at held of all and showed less ex- citement, but the recent beavy shrinkage in those stocks left less room for fi A BETTER TONE. The market showed no stay to ths drop and at 1] o'clock the market was extremely active and demoralized at the lowest prices reached. By 11:30, however, a better tone prevailed and the general list showed some improvement. THE BARINGS HAVE NOT FAILED. Aspecial cable from London, received here this morning, says: Baring Bros’, eccept- ances due today and Monday are guaranteed by financiers and the Bank of England. The total liabilities are estimated at £15,000,000, The estate on a depreciated value shows a surplus of £4.000,000. The firm have not failed, but protracted liquidation will follow, At 11 a.m. a panic prevailed, prices gave way in every direction, and brokers were dismayed at the prospect. Lackawanna, the favorite in- vestment stock, led in the downward rush with adecline of 9 per cent from 132%¢ to 128 Atchison held down to 24, Rock Island to 63! and sugar to 50, the lowest prices on record for those stocks, Canada Southern and other — dividend payers were thrown over as well as the speculative stocks, Canada Bouth- ern dropping to 43. A RALLY IN PRICES, After 11:15 there was a rally caused by the folk lowing cable from London: “The guarantee fund to Baring Brothers & Co. is stated to amount to £10,000,000 eterling. The various financial banking and discount houses guaranteeing the accounts state that the crisis is over and the failure of the firm bas been averted.” Kidder, Peabody & Co., who are the agents here of Baring Brothers & Co., London, say they have private advices from London that whatever trouble there may have been there | has been completely arranged. “The trouble was doubtless caused entirely by the de; in Argentine securities, Our house is in no- wise affected.” Thomas Baring, who is ngg at the office of Kidder, Peabody & Co., that he has nothing to add to the above statement by Kid- der, Peabody & Co. THE SITUATION IMPROVED, Money has been easy with no loans, bet offered at 5 and 6 per cent. The stork market after 11 o'clock was influenced for the better by dispatches from London, which placed a somewhat better face upon the troubles there, and prices in this market west but little farther in the downward direction. Canada Southern, however, became ex- tremely weak und dropped away 435 per cent to 42, while New England yielded 15;, Rock | Island 133, Chicago gus 13; and others generally | less than I per cent, Mauy stocks reached the lowest prices known and even lower than those | of last Tuesday. The recovery which followed | was very irregular, but amounted to as much as 4 per cent in Lackawanna, while many stocks were again brought up to near the opening active, but with less excitement and unsettled ot material losses for the day, WHAT 18 SAID IN NEW TORK. In an interview today Mr. Thomas Baring said that it was true that the Bank of England, the Rothschilds and other big English banking houses had agreed to guarantee the credit of | the Barings to the extent of £10,000,000 sterling. In regard to the condition of affairs in Wall street, Mr. Seligman of the banking firm of Seligman & Co., said; “We cannot tell any- thing definite as yet, but in regard to £10,000,000 loan to the Barings, I presume that if within a reasonable time the mar- ket takes a favorable turn they will take up their collateral and go on as always, No one can say that this is the beginning of the end of the Barings, for the simple reason that no one knows anything about it. Mr. H. Stikman of the Bank of British North America said: “I am as auxious as any one to kuow something definite, but really I do not know a thing with any certainty, Regarding the future of the Barings I ean say nothing, and 1 doubt if any one can sell with any degree of certainty until affairs have settled down sor THE BARINGS’ AFFAIRS EXPLAINED, Bostox, Nov. 15.—Messrs, Kidder, & Co, were this moruing asked for information by « reporter the liquidation of business connection therewith, i f | oF | ity f | | ? : i i td) Mt geeral itd i g g i HH ———"[Oontinned on BU Page)
