To the Editor of Tut Evexixe Star: The other evening it was announced that the President, on bis return from his trip, would receive the Count of Paris ‘with due cere- mony.” I venture to suggest that the count cannot, properly, be received by the President with any other “ceremony” than would be ob- served at the visit of a private gentleman who hadserved in our army nearly thirty yoars ago and who was the titular author of a very fair history of the war of the rebellion. ‘The reason is obvious. The Count of Paris is a pretender to the throne of a republic, be- tween which republic and our own exist very close ties, not only of diplomatic alliance, but of sentimental sympathy and attachment. Moreover, it has lately transpired that he has been conspiring against that republic and seeking to overthrow it in the promotion of his personal sclfish schemes through—of all peo- ple—that mock hero, Boulanger. It cannot be doubted that President Harri- son appreciates all thie and that his reception of the count will show that while this country is grateful for whatever service he rendered in camp or at the author's desk to this republic ivhas no sympathy with his efforts to destroy the French republic nor tho factitious prom- inence he has acquired thereby RD.
