THE ae EVENING STAR WASHINGTON October 13. 1890. |G STAR has the fullest Local Circulation of any Newspaper in the World, and as an Advertising Medium is worth more than all the other prpers published in Washington. eS * There is going to bea lively scrimmage in the special session of the Ohio legislature. The Hamilton county members and other friends of the Cincinnati board of public im- Provements contend that no good evidence of wrong doing has been produced against the board and they will make a bitter fight to pre- vent the abolition of the board and the result- ing political loss of a large number of its 1,500 employes. They even threaten to vote with the republicans to restore the gerrymandered districts, if Gov. Campbell and the democratic members of the legislature from the country push the board too hard and the special session would furnish the oppor- tunity for such a deal with the republicans be- fore the coming election. The state republi- cans enjoy the political situation hugely. If they vote that Gov. Campbell has sustained his charges against the board and it is abolished, they are assured by the Hamilton county dem- ecrats that the county will go republican through votes of the board's discharged em- Ployes. If they vote with the Hamilton county men to protect the board, it is suggested that they will be compensated bya correction of the gerrymander. For the present and immedinte future it is with them politically a case of “heads I win, tails you lose. _ Some very interesting cases will be heard at the October term of the Supreme Court, which opens today. Besides the expected reaffirma- tion of the original package decision, another matter of public interest is the electrocution case from New York, the point of unconstitu- tionality having been raised in the case of the the Japanese Jugigo. A painful feature of the opening of the session will be the absence of Justice Miller. During the past four years only for a short time last spring has there been sfull bench. When to the onerous duties of the circuit are superadded the other and sta- tionary duties of the court it will be seen why there is inability to command a full attendance of men who have lived beyond the average of years in the public service. Something must be done to relieve the Supreme Court, and done speedily. There is neither wisdom nor hu- manity in the present system. _aneeoey ola The Columbia Athletic Club of this city did not take any prizes at the Columbian games of Saturday, the first Columbiad, as it were, but the club won something of more permanent value in its capacity of host to all the athletic guests who visited the capital. It took them to its hospitable bosom, it opened to them the doors of its home and it wrote “Welcome” over its gates. What it did for itself it did for Wash- ington, and it has given to all the visitors a kindliness of personal feeling which is not less strong than was their pride in the city as the national capital. The Columbia Club has made a record for itself of the satisfactory kind which no future meet of the Amateur Athletic Union can ever break. a Our peripatetic Police Court will have to travel far before it fares worse than in its original quarters, now undergoing repairs. Even when repaired the building will be un- suitable, poorly ventilated and unhealthfal. Is it necessary to offset the honor of judicial posi- tion in the District by shortening the lives of the judges? —————— The Courier-Journal has adopted into its partisan vocabulary the word McKinleyed. It applies to prices and means an increase of from one to one thousand per cent, according to circumstances, 3 Col. Watterson, the noted free trader, is of the opinion that the late Mr. Reubea Burrows of Alabama was a “robber baron.” —$<$<$<<—————_ Simultaneously with the story of Russian activity on the Armenian border comes another story that the archducal commander of the Russian army is insane. There is no sugges- tion of cause and effect. The real commander bears no kinship to the imperial family. aan Jen coy ior. cian Every now and then South Carolina reads her peculiar declaration of independence of the ruling party in the state, no matter whether the party be federal, republican or dem- ocratic. - ———— + As an athletic center Washington bids fair to take the same rank as it does capitally, so- cially, politically and beautifully, and the charm of our athletic excellence is that it is all non-professional.
