SOCIAL MATTERS. Extension of the Wedding Season—Per- sonal Notes of Interest. ‘The season of weddings will be extended this year toan unusual lateness by a number ef matrimonial events in which some of the most prominent of the resident society tami- lies are concerned. Miss Aunie Wilson. daugh- ter of Judge and Mrs. Jeremiah M. Wilxon of I street, has announced her engagement to Mr. William Haywood of the State Department. ‘The wedding day has been se? for Wednesday the 26th of November. A few of the family friends will be asked to witness the ceremony, which will take piace in the drawing room, and will be followed by large reception, for which many invitations will be sent out. ‘The engagement of Licut Samuel Lemly of the navy and Miss Hattie Milliken of Portland, Me., and who is the niece of Representative Seth L. Milliken of Belfast, is announced. The marriage will be celebrated on the 17th of De- ecember. Lieut. Lemly is a great favorite in Washington society. Another prospective wedding is that of Lieut. Alger of the navy and Miss Taylor, who is the granddaughter of Gen. Meigs. Itis understood that Lieut. Alger will be appointed a professor of mathematics in the Annapolis academy at the next vacancy. Mra. Mary A. Winans has ont invitations for the marriage of her daughter, Miss Alice Angel Winans, and Mr. William Cromwell Downey on Wednesday evening, October 22, at the Metro- politan M-E. Church. Admiral and Mrs. Porter, who are at Newport, will leave there tomorrow for their hom this city. They will be accompanied by Mr. Richard Porter. The admiral has not been well lately, but is now feeling greatly izaproved ip health and strength. Ex-Surgeon General Wales will make a trip to Newport this week. Miss Mary Gordon Pratt and Dr.Wm. Barbour. has enjoyed good health this season and is at her home on ‘th street. One of these interesting and comparatively rare social events—a golden wedding—was celebrated last evening at the residence of the septuagenarian bride and bridegroom, Mr. and Mra, David Charles Bell, 1517 35th street. The family party consisted of the eldest daughter, Mrs. Hiome, with her two sons from New York and London; Mrs. Dr. James Kerr of Wash- ington with Dr. Kerr, three sons and one daughter; Mies Ailean Bell. There are many hucksters pretending to be country people who sell vegetables about the markets. The dealers inside the markets com- plain that these bucksters are required to pay no license and the small amount of stand rent charged enables them to sell goods at lower Prices than the licensed dealers. So far as the law is concerned the outside dealers are as lia- bie to the $25 liceuse tax as those who do busi- mess inside the marketa The officers ere 6 continually on the watch for these unlicensed hucksters, but they generally find it difficult tomake out cases against them. Under the law the purchase and sale of articles by them must be sbown, and ‘teat is what renders it difficult to make the case, Country people and gardeners who raise their own produce do not have to pay the license tax, and these dealers who sail under false colors have to pose ®s countrymen to avoid the pay- ment of the license tax. Saturday at the Eastern market Samuel A. Carter, a colored man from the country, who sold out his own produce, purchased from another countryman & box of tomatoes, on the sale of wiich he ex- pected to realize a few more pennies. The marketmaster arrested him when he sold one- quarter peck of tomatoes and when the case was heard before Judge Mills today the judge held that the transaction coustituted a viol of the law and a fine of $30 was imposed. seta neces A Political Row.
