Last evening the coroner held the inquest at the second precinct station. The jurors were Isaac W. Busey, James Fortune, William Mar- tin, Edward 8. Percell, John Port and W. C. Was positive about Monday, for he was painting his house and was scarcely at his office that day. He found her in a congestive chill and made three visits, and he had no doubt but the congestive chili and heart trouble caused her death. Dr. Patterson—If you had seen the post- mortem perhaps you would have changed your mind. Dr. Bushnell—Yes, it would aggravate the trouble; but it was not my work. ANOTHER ENGINE HOUSE NEEDED NORTH OF FLORIDA AVENUE—WATER NEEDED 1X THE SUBURBS—ESTIMATES FOR THE COMIXG FIR- Cal Yean, Chief Parris of the fire ‘department today submitted his report of the workings of hie department for the fiscal year just ended, to- gether with an estimate of the amount required to conduct the fire department for the fiscal year to end June 30, 1892. The report says there are at presont eight engine houses, all of which are in good condi- tion, with the exception of numbers 2 and 4, the former being dilapidated and unhealthy and the latter so old and out of repair that it would require the entire appropriation: made for repairs tokeep it in order. In this connec- tion Chief Parris recommend an appropriation of $12,000 toerecta new engine house, He refers to the good conduct ana thorough discipline of the force, which he says he is de- termined to maintain, as it is one of the roqui- sites for a successful fire department. INSUIFICIENT Pay. Referring to the pay of the members of the department, he says tat, with the exception of an increase of $5 per month to hostlers and Privates, thero has been no increase since the organization of the department. Since they are required to live in closo proximity to t! company's quarters the improvements and a vance In real estate has made it hard for them to take proper care of thi families. A pro- motion of eleven privates to the rank of assist- ant foremen is recommended, with a corre- sponding increase of pay. There are two old-style engines in the de- partment which the chief recommends be ex- changed, and an appropriation of $8,000 to effect the exchange is requested. The rapid growth of that section of the city north of Flo- rida avenuc, between Connecticut avenue and Mth street, the chicf says, isin need of more adequate means and greater appliances for the suppression of fires, and a new company for that section {s ostimated for. Four new watchmen are provided for. additional privates toench engin» company and ont to each truck company are estimated for, Chief Parris thinking the effectiveness of the depart- ment demands it, THE RELIEF FUND, Speaking of the relief tund, he renews his past recommendations that some means be de- vised for creating a reserve fund for the bene- Ait of disabled Sremen. At present, he says, 117 members pay $1 per month into this fund, and, as the pension roll already amounts to $110 per month, but $7 remain to be invested in bonds at the end of each month. He recom- mends that «certain amount of the fines col- lected for violating ordinances of the District be applied to this fund. For instance, in addi- tion wo the $1 deducted from each fireman's psy, 35 per ceut of the fines collected might be added, During the year fifty applications for posi- | tious in the department were received; ten o the applicants received appointments, e A practical machinist and engincer to take charge of all apparatus at $1,200 per annum is estimated for. PROTECTION OF THE SUDURBS, Chief Parris calls attoution to those section known as Mount Pleasaut, Lincoln avenue and Anacostia. These suburbs, he says, are sadly in need of water facilities on account of the large number of wooden buildings. He,there- fore, recommends that watcr mains be extended out Lincoln avenue, 1th street and over the Eastern branch, and that the sections men- tioned be included im the fire-alarm circuit, Also that water mai be extended out $2d strect four blocks. During the year there were 207 alarms for fire and 118 local or stil! alarms, the whole entailing a loss of $113,191, covered by au insurance of $73,873, against a loss of #110,955 and an insurance of $79,734 the pre- vious year, ESTIMATES. The foliowing estimates for the support of the department are also submitted: One chief engineer, $2,500; two assistants, at $1,500 eac one fire marshal, at £1.200; one clerk, at $1,200 eleven foremen, at $1,200 each; eight engi neers, nt #1,150 cach; eight firemen, at #930 hroe tillermen, at $930 cach; twelve hostlers, at $030 eac! venty-six private $900 cach; six watchmen. at €720 each: veterinary eurgeon, $1,000; cleven assistant foremen, 3960 ; eleven hostlers, 9930 each, and ope machinist, at €1,200. Total, $147,400. The above includes an increase of salaries throughout the department, ‘THE FIRE MARSIAL’S REPORT is appended to the above. It shows among other things that the oil stored about the city isa far better grade than heretofore. During the year he received eighteen complaints of unsafe buildings, all of which were remedied, Au Res Dows From the weakening effects of warm weather by hard ‘work or from a long illness, yon need a good tonic and blood purifier, Hood's Sarsaparilia gives a good appe- ct trengthens the whole system, purifies the blood, lates the digestion.
