JOUN M. LANGSTON. Mr. Langston was notified to be at home last night to receive his enthusiastic fellow-citizens, His cottage, surrounded by handsome grounds, is near the Howard University. Lights were burning from parlor to attic anda large com- paay were assembied, in the midst of them the successful candidate, shaking hands and receiv- ing congratulations,’ Langston was lionized. ‘THEY CAME WITH RED FIRE. A crowd was assembled in the garden and in the street in front of the house. A little betofe 9 o'clock a blaze of red light glared out among the trees that form a large grove between tho house and the 7th street road, announcing the approach of the serenaders, The band was playing at full blast, but was almost drowned by the shouting of .the enthu- siasts as the procession reached the gate. Mr. Langston stepped upon the front porch, ac- companied by as many of his guests as could find standing room there, and his appearance was received with prolonged cheers. Mr. Ross Hamilton. chairman of the republican execu- tive committee of the Petersburg district, intro- duced Dr. Purvis, who extended the congratu- lations of the assemblage to Mr, Langston, MR, LANGSTON’S SPEECH. Mr. Langston said in response: Ik high honor to confer on any American @ seat iu that House where Reed is Speaker {cheers}. where McKinley is the leader of the party on the floor, and where Cannon and Gros- yenor are, When a negro born in the state of Virgmia makes his way, by the grace of God, into the House of Representatives, then he is IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, New Registration of Voters—Railroad or Canal?—Personal and General Notes. Correspondence of Tux Kvsxima 87, La, Soph 96 Rocaviure, The next meetings of the officers of registra- tion will take place in the several election dis- tricts of the county on the 6th, 7th, 2th and 9th days of October, and on the 20th of that month meeting will be held for the purpose of revision and hearing spplications for reinstatement by Persons whose names shall have been stricken off the registries, This last meeting is an im- portant one to former voters temporarily re- siding in the District and whose names have been stricken off under the new registration law. ‘This is the last chanee they will have for reinstatement, except upon sppeal to the judge of the hres > court, Peopio living in the western part of the county and along the line of the Chesapeake and Ohio canal are again thrown into a state of doubt and uncertainty in regard to future means of transportation by the new move made by the opponents of the and Cum- berland railroad before the circuit court for Washington county, and the decision of Judge Alvey is looked forward te with much interest. The statement of Gen. Bradley T. Johnson, counsel for the holders of the '44 and '78 bonds (said to be largely owned at prosent by the timore and Ohio Railroad Company), that the canal could be put in running or by next spring is looked upon as mere folly vy those acquainted with its present condition, but that itcould be put im @ good condition as is desired by that company there appears to be no doubt; indeed, the present condition of the work appears to be eminently satisiactory to them, Jonathan W. Baker, through Frank Higgins, has sold to Benson Talbott of this place hw farm of $11 acres, situated near the Chesa- eake and Ohio canal, for €3,500 cash, realiz- ing an advance of $1,000 within the past year. Messrs. Ibett aud C. A, McEueu have sold Jardencr farm of 442 acres, near Beall’s mill, in this district, to J, Hite Miller, price not made pubiic. The same parties have also sold to « Washington syndicate the farm ot R. H.C, Alloutt, iv Poolesville district and containing 40234 acres, price not known. The Presbyterian Chapel near Poolesville will be ated next Sunday, Rev. J. J. Bullock, D.D., preaching the dedication ser- mon, The pastor of the church. Rev. C, 8. Lingamfelter, has accepted a call to Elkins, W. Va., and will leave for his new charge in a few weeks, The board of management of the Agricul- tural Society met here today for the pur, of settling up the business of the late exhibition. The treasurer, E. C, Peter. reported the re- ceipts from all sources to be #4,427, estimated exponses $3,400, leaving a balance of $1,027, which, added to balance of €544 from last year, makes the amount on hand $1,571. The treas- urer was ord premiums and ex- penses yet du 800 on the mortgage debt of the society, leaving the balance on hand for improvements next year. Mr. W. E. Muncaster was authorized to finish the grand and judges’ stands by rooting and whatever else is necessary. Mr. W. 8. Lowman of Harper's Ferry, W.Va., aud Miss Clara B. Moore of this county were married here today by Rev. 8. R, White. Mrs, Mary M. Dodds, formerly of the District, is lying critically ill at her residence here. li Nugent, colored, been committed to jail at this place, charged with the larceny ot a watch from Wallace Martin last Sunday. He will be held for court in default of $300 baii. The democrats the county are making preparations for the campaign by the ede Ment of committees in each of the thirteen election districts, Farmers in this section have about finished cutting off the corn crop and reports from all parts of the county indicate a more than avi age crop and of fine quality. The recent ad- vance in the prices of cereals has stimulated farmers to increase their acreage for wheat this fall, and all available land will be put to that use. 8.A.M. honored, indeed, and so i the race he repre- sents. I do not wonder that you turn out to congratulate yourselves when one of your race is given a seat in that House wiere the orators of Virginia used to stand when you were slaves. Eight million people loci ou tonight, proud of this victory of the colored race, Sixty million men thank God that they belong to a republi- can nation. The party of victory rejoices to- night that the class that it emancipated has ad- vanced to take the weight of government on tts broad shoulders, It is a great thing to come from the Old Dominion that gave us Washing- ton and Jefferson and. Madison and Monroe and Patrick Henry. Patrick Henry said to the world, “Give me liberty or give death.” We have got liberty, And now the slave class has advanced to liberty, we must save the negro. I say the negro must save himself. For noone ean save you but yourself. As God has given you hauds and arms and feet and eyes, intelleets and genius and power, you shall save your- selves and no other snall save you. We enter on car daty bravely and valiantiy. This is our government to aid and our fellows to save. If it is purpose that is wanted we will give it. If it is courage that is wanted we wilf'give it by hogsheads, even. until the blood shall run in streams, if necessary, till by the comming]: of white men’s blood and black men’s bloo: our Komamay degree be the grandest and our gov- ernment greatest and most lasting the world has ever seen or ever will see. That is the signiticance of the republican victory in the House of Representatives yester- day. We will go forth and conquer in the name of the whitestand blackest man in the country. We shail aid in the interpretation of the Constitution and in its application. We shall consider the question, isa pure ballot in @ guarded and protected baliot box the shield that presorves our national integrity? used to give us rights, We will help to giv: the country rights now. We are in the great Congress of the nation. We will advance to the Senate, and when necessary, when the gro bas grown as greatand learned and mag- nificent as he now is loyal and true, he shall go on to the President's chair. [Cheers]. We'll hot stay anywhere, They suid, “No algge shall represeut the fourth district of Virgi: and with Reed to lead, McKinley to defend, Cannon to advocate, Grosvenor to speak and Powell and Haugen to stand steadfast for the right, victory is ours. Let me tell you what we are going to do down in Virginia, We will send almost a republican from Alexandria dis- trict, if not entirely a republican. They sav Frank ume is going to be elected. Ifheis the right man let him be — Shoes will send a hap pemanr from the lericksburg district, « lican from the Norfolk district—a pai man_ that every time the roll was called in the House voted for Langston and equal rights. ‘Wha are you ap in the fourth district?’ you ask, Why, I have been nominated in ever: prayer, meeting all over the district. {Cheers} * Old Virginia fiually, having sent six or seven republjcans to the next Congress, will be carried in 1892. It may be that Reed will be oar candidate (continued cheering}. 1t may be Harrison. But it makes no difference who- ever it is, Clarkson or any other man, Virginia will go by 20,000 majority for that man, true to the negro and true to republican '” fast in liberty as once she waa fast in slavery. « © * Our course is onward, always onward, That classic syeamore under which Peg now stand (pointing toa fine old tree in the yard) was given me by Charles Sumner to plant here to mark thi spot.
